The irrepressible comedienne and author of Ali in Wonderland talks Vera Wang, Greek dancing, and love at first sight.
"George and I were engaged two months after we met," says Alexandra "Ali" Wentworth who was set up on a blind date with Good Morning America's George Stephanopoulos in April 2001. "By the end of lunch, it was a done deal. Basically the feeling was: Okay, we're madly in love; it's clear we're going to get married." That November, the pair made it official in front of 150 guests at the Church of the Holy Trinity in New York, with a little help from Stephanopoulos's father (a Greek Orthodox priest) and what Wentworth calls "the GMA crew": Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, and Peter Jennings. "We had Greek dancing; people had a really good time," says Wentworth, who's hosting a new Web show on Yahoo! called Daily Shot. "You had, like, Mike Nichols hanging out with the little kids, and George's great-grandmother dancing with Cars frontman Ric Ocasek." Wentworth herself wore a classic ivory silk-and-lace Vera Wang sheath that she picked out in a single afternoon—and still loves. "There was none of that panicky bride stuff with me at all," she says. "I just wanted to marry George."
