Soccer star Alex Morgan is no stranger to bling. At only 23 years old, she scored the game-winning goal that secured the United States' victory over Canada at the 2012 London Olympics and earned her and her teammates Olympic gold medals. A year and a half later, Alex added something a little more sparkly to her collection: an emerald-cut engagement ring!
In early December of 2013, Alex's now-fiancé Servando Carrasco — who she's been dating since their years at the University of California, Berkeley — brought her down to the water in Manhattan Beach, California, to watch a fireworks show. "He asked me to stand up, then got down on one knee," she remembers. "It was so sweet. Everyone around us was watching the fireworks, so no one had any idea what was going on. It was so intimate."
While she's keeping her dress under wraps, Alex agreed to give us a few details. "I wanted a shape that would work with my body, so I started out trying on pretty much everything: sleeves, strapless, low backs, full skirts, you name it," she says. "A trumpet shape really flattered me the best, so we went from there." Expect lace and a modern, classy feel with a little bit of a sexy twist.
To go with her mystery gown, Alex, who is a spokesperson for ChapStick, is well into her pre-wedding beauty regimen. The athlete is focusing on skincare (she swears by the brand's Hydration Lock products) and never forgets to wear SPF — especially while on the field!
The couple, who are getting married this winter, started planning with the sea in mind. "We're both from southern California," says Alex, "so we knew we wanted the wedding to be outdoors by the water." Because both the bride and groom are juggling soccer schedules, training, and endorsements that bring them all over the country (she's a forward for the Portland Thorns FC, he's a midfielder for the Houston Dynamo), they're relying heavily on their wedding planner, as well as their families. "My sister and her boyfriend went to the menu tasting for us, and my mother-in-law has been a huge help, as well," says Alex. They're keeping the day natural, with ivory, blush, and pear tones and touches of burlap and lace. "We'll also be incorporating our cultures," says Alex, including a Latin-infused menu and a reading in Spanish during the ceremony. It's a good thing Alex has all that help, since while she's planning her wedding, she's also gearing up for the FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada in 2015!
"I haven't really been too stressed, thanks to our planner," says Alex. "But I've been having nightmares that Servando wasn't there or that things went wrong. I told my best friend, who just got married, and instead of calming me down she said 'Don't worry, they'll get worse!'" But with such a stellar team lined up, we're sure Alex and Servando's wedding will go off without a hitch.
