Registry Etiquette

Question:

We want to register for a mortgage but my mom insists that we pick out traditional items, too, like dishes and glassware. We’ve been living together for two years, and, honestly, we’ve got everything we need. What do I tell her?

Answer:

A registry is a synonym for a wish list. What you put on that list is, ideally, what you and your fiancé really want, which in this case is to own your own home. Here’s the rub: Some of your guests, especially older ones, may not feel comfortable making a contribution to a mortgage, since that basically amounts to giving cash. You’d be wise to register for some household and electronics items in addition to the mortgage. Once you spend some time picking out gifts, you’ll probably discover that there are many things that will come in handy down the road. After all, someday you’ll have a whole house to furnish!
