Question:
I want to have a fun bachelorette party at a beach cottage, but my maid of honor may not be into it because she's a stay-at-home mom with two kids. Is it okay if I plan my own bachelorette party?
Answer:

First, find out whether your maid of honor or other friends already have a party in the works. If they do, be gracious and appreciative. Accept their invitation and enjoy the evening, wherever it is. If, on the other hand, it's early in the game and planning hasn't started, you could certainly drop a few hints about the type of party you think would be most fun. The downside of throwing your own bachelorette party is financial: Since this particular shindig is generally paid for by all participants other than the bride, you'd in essence be asking for their money without letting them decide how to spend it. The only polite way for you to throw it yourself is to also pay for it yourself.
