Forget about decorating your cake with plain old roses—any kind of flower can be replicated in sugar or painted onto the surface of your cake. This modern-looking cake was inspired by a trip to Home Depot. Baker Michelle Bommarito, 248-336-3977, michellebommarito.com, of Bloomfield Hills, found a plant stand there covered in abstract flowers and decided to replicate the design in wedding cake form. She frosted it with rolled fondant and draped vines of handcrafted sugar flowers colored with luster dust around the tiers. "The rich chocolate background really makes the colors pop," she says.
