Valentine's Day Candy Matchboxes
Stationery designer Brooke Reynolds shows us how to turn matchboxes into sweet candy containers.
Valentine's Day Candy Matchboxes
Transform basic matchboxes into pretty little containers to fill with candy and give to friends.
Created by: Brooke Reynolds, Inchmark, inchmark.com
Supplies
- Matchboxes (available at the grocery store, usually in packs of 10)
- Decorative paper (or download a PDF of our polka-dot- and gingham-patterned papers below)
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Double-sided tape or glue stick
- Crayons or colored markers
- Embellishments such as stickers, if desired
- Candy (regular M&M's and candy corn work well)
- Baker's twine or thin ribbon (optional)
Step 1
Empty the matches out of a matchbox (save them for your next blackout!).
Step 2
To create the matchbox "cover," measure the length of the box and the distance around it (you'll need the paper to be long enough to wrap all the way around and overlap a bit in the back).
Step 3
Using those dimensions, draw a rectangle on the decorative paper.
Step 4
Cut out the paper cover.
Step 5
Wrap the paper around the matchbox and secure the flap with the double-sided tape or glue stick.
Step 6
Using your imagination, create a design for each box with crayons, pretty stickers, paper cutouts, paper bands displaying the recipient's name, etc. (You can also draw a design on the paper first, and cut it to fit the box afterward.)
Final Step
Fill the box with candy.
Optional step: Wrap the box with string or ribbon (attaching a cut-out name tag, if desired) and tie in a bow.
