Graphic Nature
We love the modern yet, ultrafeminine design of this four-tier wedding cake created by the Cake Girls, 773-404-3147, thecakegirls.com. It was made for Ryan and Jen Maconochie, both graphic designers, who were married in Chicago. "We tried to design something within the context of a nature theme," notes co-owner Brenda Maher. "Since the bride and groom are graphic designers, we also tried to combine elements of contemporary graphic design, such as clean lines and textures, as well as a unique color palette." The cake is covered in pale yellow fondant and features an intricate design inspired by wild vines that are created with lines, swirls and dots. Sugar paste butterflies adorn the edges, as though in mid-flight. The inside is equally as impressive: chocolate, banana cake with a crème de banana custard. "A good wedding cake should always taste wonderful," says Maher. "It should represent the couple’s personal preferences, instead of trying to please every guest." Price: $10 per slice (serves 145 guests).
