Marriage License Requirements

How to make it legal in Florida

The Basics

• In order to obtain a Florida marriage license, both parties need to be present.

• There is a three-day waiting period if you're a Florida resident but no waiting period for nonresidents or residents who have completed the Premarital Preparation Course.

• The Premarital Preparation Course is for Florida residents and is optional. Taught by an instructor registered with the Clerk of the Circuit Court, the course is approximately four hours long and includes information on conflict and financial management, parenting and communication skills. The course is valid for no more than one year before the date of the marriage license application.

• Once the license is issued, it is valid for 60 days.

• No medical examinations or blood tests are required.

What to Bring

• Identification: Both parties must have valid photo identification (driver's license, passport, state, or military identification card).

• Proof of Age: You must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old with parental consent, and both of you must have your Social Security cards on hand.

• Proof of Alien Registration: If you're not a U.S. citizen, proof of alien registration is needed.

• Money: The cost is $93.50 and method of payment depends on each county. The fee is $56.00 for Florida residents who have successfully completed the Premarital Preparation Course.
