The Basics
• You can apply in any county clerk's office in the state, and the license will be valid anywhere in Texas.
• Both you and your fiancé must apply for the license in person, together, at least one half hour before the county clerk's office closes.
• There is a 72-hour waiting period after the license is issued before the marriage may be performed, and the marriage must take place within 30 days of the license being issued or it will expire. The 72-hour waiting period does not apply to those who are enrolled in active duty in the U.S. armed forces.
• Applicants who have been divorced within the past 30 days cannot marry a third party unless the prohibition is waived by a court order. However, the divorced parties may remarry each other at any time.
• Blood tests or medical certificates are not required.
What to Bring
• Identification: A certified copy of your birth certificate, your Social Security card, a driver's license, passport, or military ID. Some places require a government-issued picture ID, so a birth certificate alone is not sufficient.
• Proof of Age: Applicants who are ages 14 through 17 must be accompanied by a parent.
• Money: The license fee varies slightly depending on the location.
