Frequently Asked Questions for DJs
What music genres are in your collection? 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, Acoustic, Big Band, Classic Rock, Country, Dance, Funk, Gospel, Hip Hop, Jazz, Motown, Oldies, Pop, Punk Rock, R&B, Rock, Soul, Swing
Do you have liability insurance? No
Describe your DJ style: I let the music do the talking. I speak when necessary, such as for introductions of the wedding party or special dances, not just to hear the sound of my voice.
Is there a limit to the amount of music that can be requested? No.
What is your usual attire? Flexible. From very formal, tux shirt, black tie, black pants, etc. to business casual, Dockers and collared shirt. Generally for a wedding reception, I wear a shirt, tie and black dress pants.
If you do not have one of the songs pre-requested by the client, do you require that they provide it? No. If I don't have a song in my library that the couple pre-requests, I will have it by the reception. Another reason I like to meet with the couple.
How many other DJs do you work with? Just me.
What is the minimum amount of time you will DJ for? No minimum time, but it does take approximately an hour and a half to set up the sound and lights, less set up time with no lights.
Is the client able to meet the DJ before booking? Absolutely. I wouldn't have it any other way. I want to make sure that I play the kind of music the couple wants. This gives the couple a chance to meet me and also gives me a chance to ask them if there are any special songs they want, or don't want, and if there is a particular style of music that their family and friends might request so I can be prepared.
Do you specialize in any ethnic or international events? I am not really equipped to do international or ethnic events.
Can the client submit a do-not-play list? Absolutely. I don't want to play any song that will offend or bring the party down.
Do you bring your own equipment? Yes. I have a professional sound system and light show.
What (if any) special equipment, such as disco balls or lighting, is offered with your service? I have a full light system with disco ball, multi-colored LED spots, 1 mbt Itsy Bitsy, 1 7 lense Moonflower light, 1 Chauvet Vertigo, and strobe. I don't like bubble machines because they tend to make the floor slick from the solution and cause a possibility of slipping.
How much time do you usually need to set up? Do you require that the site or client provide a table for you to set up on? I require 1 and a half hours to set up and a little less than that to tear down. I require 1 banquet type table at the site.
Do you have any extra space requirements? No. I am pretty flexible on the amount of space required. If it is a small venue, I can set up very compact, including lights.
Do you have a sign or banner that you use at events? I have a professionally printed sign that I place on the front of my station.
Do you usually emcee the event or talk between songs? Only when necessary. I find it better to let the music do the talking. I do introductions of the wedding party and announce special dances, such as first dance, dollar dance, etc., but I don't announce each song.
How would you motivate the crowd if no one is dancing? Reiterate that I take requests.
What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal? If I am DJ'ing a reception with a meal, it is customary to include the DJ in that meal, even though I am playing music. It is not required, though. This can be addressed in our initial meeting.
Will you arrange for recorded music to play during your breaks? N/A
What is your backup plan in case you become unavailable on the day of the event? This has never happened, but if the need would arise, I will make sure you have a reputable replacement.
Do you book yourself for more than one event in a day? No. I dedicate the entire day to one event.
What is your overtime rate? I find it easier to just charge a flat rate for the entire reception.
Do you charge for travel expenses? If yes, how much do you charge? Depends on how far outside the Des Moines Metro are the event is. If far enough to require an over night stay, then I ask that a motel room to be provided in addition to a mileage charge of $1 per mile.
What is the required deposit to secure your services? $50
