Washington D.C. Ideas We Love

Eat Your Cake and Have It, Too

Emily Taylor of Emily Hunter Taylor Porcelains, 804-229-5102, emilyhuntertaylor.com, says her favorite "food group" is cake. Few of us disagree, but we can’t quite equal her passion for the dessert. The Richmond-raised porcelain artist now designs miniature ceramic replicas of wedding cakes. Using a photo of the cake, Taylor begins with a 4-to-6-inch-wide clay base to match the original proportions of the cake. Flowers and other decor are crafted of clay, much the way a baker would do it with fondant, and then the cake is fired in the kiln, painted and fired again. Cost: $400 and up.
