Honeymoon Guide: Fiji

WHY WE LOVE IT

Fiji is like Mother Nature's gift to newlyweds. Over 300 islands—most of them uninhabited—are sprinkled with deserted beaches, lush horticulture, and unexplored coral reefs.

Bures: The traditional thatched-roof hut (pronounced "boo-ray") is the dwelling of choice for many resorts’ private honeymoon accommodations. Perfect for pretending you’re castaways.

Friendly Fijians: Expect to be greeted with the traditional "Bula!" wherever you go.

Underwater paradise: Fiji’s coral reefs are unspoiled, healthy, and colorful. Once you get a look at what’s in the water (including Fiji’s famous bright-blue starfish), you won’t want to get out.

Must Buys: Sulus, the colorful lengths of fabric that both men and women wear wrapped in various creative ways; pure Fiji coconut lotions are creamy and very fragrant; tanoa bowls, from which the regional beverage, kava, is served; woven mats and fabrics from local villages.

WHEN TO GO

Fiji has no off-season. Temperatures tend to be a bit cooler from May to October and most resorts offer air conditioning.

WHERE TO EAT

Dining in Fiji is a bit different than it is in other honeymoon spots, because you'll most likely be taking most of your meals at your resort. Luckily, the resort restaurants are among the country's best. Since almost every traveler to Fiji passes through Nadi and Port Denarau, we've included some good restaurants in those areas

INDIGO
Port Denarau Marina, Denarau Island

A great place to enjoy some of Fiji's best and most authentic Indian cuisine. You'll enjoy the choice of dining in air conditioning inside or under the stars outside. In addition to outstanding Indian cuisine you can select from an extensive Asian foods with an emphasis on Thai. A great choice for lunch or dinner.

CARDOS STEAKHOUSE AND COCKTAIL BAR
Port Denarau Marina, Denarau Island

Cardos has been associated with the Marina for longer than any other establishment. Everyone knows Cardos for providing quality chargrilled steaks and fish. As with most restauraunts in the Marina you have the choice of doining inside or outside and enjoying all the people watching. Cardos is also open for breakfast if you are departing for outer islands for the Marina or looking for a different place for lunch.

DAIKOKU
Queens Road in the Martinar area

Located a short 15 minutes from Port Denarau, Daikoku is the must got to restaurant for Japanese. Daikoku is two restuarants in one, with the upstairs featuring teppanyaki cooked to order by very well trained chefs, and the downstairs sushi bar serving very fresh fish. You can also order udon, sukiyaki and other traditional dishes. Daikoku is a favorite with the locals.

CHEFS THE RESTAURANT
Sangayam Road, Nadi and Port Denaurau

Chefs is arguably Fiji's best stand-alone restaurant. The elegant tropical decor, the top-notch service, and the ambitious menu are all more of what you might expect to find in a bustling Australian city, as opposed to small, touristy Nadi. Dishes range from the familiar (you can get a good hamburger here) to the much-better regional choices like freshwater clam in wild-banana cream-and-coconut sauce. With 2 locations, Chefs is the perfect palce for a great evening before your flight back to Los Angeles.

BONEFISH SEAFOOD RESTAURANT
Port Denarau Marina, Denarau Island

Bonefish specializes in fresh seafood with some unique preparations. The menu extends beyond fish so it is a good choice for two different palates. It is a great place to have a romantic dinner under the stars overlooking the waterway. Staff is very attentive.

TATA'S
Nadi Back Road, Nadi

If you are looking to experience food the way the locals have it, and enjoy curry, then Tata's is the place. Absolutely nothing fancy and when you first see it you will wonder why you stopped. But once you try the curries you'll know why. They are the best and the hottest in Fiji. Tata's is legendary with the locals but unknown to almost all visitors.
