Honeymoons You'll Both Love: Riviera Maya, Mexico
Couples often have different ideas about what makes for a great vacation. But there are a few compromise-free honeymoon spots that you'll both enjoy—let's call these the intersection of relaxing and action-packed. Afterward you may differ on the "best" part of the trip, but you'll both be smiling like crazy in the pictures.
WHY YOU'LL BOTH LOVE IT Easy to access via the Cancún International Airport, this 86-mile strip along the Caribbean Sea has white-sand beaches and luxe resorts, ancient ruins, and "adventure light" courtesy of the region's ecological parks.
RELAX Miles and miles of beaches means lots of accommodation choices, from mega all-inclusive resorts to small boutique hotels. There are also some great spas worth visiting, many of which incorporate the traditional ingredients and methods of the region into their treatments. For instance, the spa at the Mandarin Oriental offers a Temazcal (kind of an "upscale sweat lodge" deal) guided by a Mayan shaman, while the Om...Spa at Ana y José uses the Mayan herb chaya in a rehydrating "After-Sun" body wrap. If shopping is the only activity that can pry you away from beaching and massages, head to La Quinta Avenida in Playa del Carmen, where you'll find quality handicrafts made by local artisans—perfect for souvenirs.
EXPLORE The region's plentiful, easy-to-get-to Mayan ruins are more than enough to entertain a culture and history buff who can't abide "wasting" a day sipping margaritas in a cabana. Tulum was one of the few developments the Mayans built near the ocean, and many of the ancient city's cliffside structures are still well preserved, including El Castillo ("The Castle"), a former watchtower overlooking the ocean. The ruins at Cobá have a more "Indiana Jones" feel thanks to the dense jungle that surrounds the site. Explore a network of paths on a rented bike, or climb Nohoch Mul, the tallest pyramid in the Yucatán (a great way to justify—or counteract—a decadent dinner).
COULD BE FUN Okay, they are supertouristy, but eco-parks Xcaret and Xel-Há do offer a great mix of experiences that will appeal to you both. At Xcaret you can snorkel, swim with dolphins, and explore jungle lagoons (or let someone else do all that while you sunbathe on the beach). Xel-Há also offers something for everyone. Thrill-seekers can cliff dive, while loafers will love the turquoise-blue lagoon or "Hammock Island," which is exactly what it sounds like: palm trees and cocktails.
