Honeymoons You'll Both Love: Puerto Rico

Couples often have different ideas about what makes for a great vacation. But there are a few compromise-free honeymoon spots that you'll both enjoy—let's call these the intersection of relaxing and action-packed. Afterward you may differ on the "best" part of the trip, but you'll both be smiling like crazy in the pictures.

WHY YOU'LL BOTH LOVE IT Split your time between the remote, relaxing island of Vieques and the bustling city of San Juan, now one of the easiest-to-get- to (and least expensive) spots in the Caribbean, thanks to more direct flights.

RELAX Start your honeymoon off with a few days of blissful unwinding on the island of Vieques. Located just eight miles east of the main island, Vieques is accessible by ferry from Fajardo or—even easier—via puddle-jumper from the San Juan airport. The island has only recently begun to be developed (it was used for U.S. military operations until 2003), so there are still plenty of unspoiled beaches to be explored and enjoyed. Some of the best include easy-to-access Sun Bay and Red Beach. Blue Beach and Green Beach are a bit more off the beaten path, but the reward is that you may have these little gems all to yourselves. The recent development also means that, while there aren't many lodging options on the island, those that do exist are newer (and cooler) than most. Cases in point: the just-opened W Retreat & Spa, and the modern, minimalist lofts at architect John Hix's Hix Island House.

Island life is very mellow—you can go for an easy snorkel around the coral reefs or search for shells and other treasures as you stroll the beach. Still, taking a snooze (alone or together) in a hammock could easily be the most "exhilarating" activity on your list. During your stay in Vieques you should motivate one night to tour Mosquito Bay, one of the world's brightest bioluminescent bays, at dusk. Jump in and you'll find yourself surrounded by glowing microorganisms. Don't worry, they're harmless, and you don't feel them, you see them—it's pretty spectacular.

EXPLORE As one of the largest cities in the Caribbean, San Juan has plenty to keep you busy. And it's all pretty low-fi, so your spouse can deal. Must-do's include walking around the boutique museums, art galleries, and shops in Old San Juan, where you'll also see historical sites like El Morro fort and La Santa Catedral de San Juan Bautista. If you're in town on a Sunday, visit the Paseo de la Princesa at sunset, when the promenade fills with musicians, food carts, and artists.

For a more adventurous day trip, head to El Yunque rain forest, about an hour away from the city. A 45-minute hike on La Mina trail culminates at a dramatic waterfall (yes, you can swim in it—very romantic à deux). Your spouse certainly shouldn't mind accompanying you on a tour of the Bacardi Rum Factory in nearby Cataño, which is followed by a tasting. Or—unless you've married a complete curmudgeon—experience a bit of the night life: Check out the chic Isla Verde section of the city to try cocina criolla, the local cuisine, then hit one of San Juan's many casinos. For an upscale, old-school vibe Sinatra might have liked (think: tuxedo-clad staff and crystal chandeliers), try your luck at El San Juan Hotel & Casino.

COULD BE HOT Even if neither of you is a big dancer, there's no denying that salsa is sexy. So, include a night out at a local salsa spot on the agenda (we'd party at Nuyorican Café, a favorite for dancing to live music until the wee hours). Don't have the moves? Check the café's online calendar for salsa lessons.
