Honeymoon Movie Inspiration: Out of Africa

The Inspiration: The romance and mystery of a land largely untouched by man, plus those aerial views of exotic wildlife in Out of Africa.

Book a Ticket To: Kenya

When to Go: The dry, hot months of January and February, or between July and October to view the breathtaking spectacle of the wildebeest migration.

Places to Stay: Classic Safari Camps of Africa offers several options around the Masai Mara National Park, where much of Out of Africa was filmed. For an experience closest to the British colonial era of the movie, try Cottars 1920s Safari Camp, which is located on a private 250,000-acre concession bordering the Serengeti. The camp features several safari options, including "A Walk Back in Time" which aims to recreate the luxury and formality of 1920s safari with details like porters, tea service, and period hunting vehicles (though actual hunting is no longer allowed). Guests sleep in private canvas tents, but it's hardly roughing it: Each comes complete with a four-poster bed, safari antiques, outdoor veranda, and private butler (from $415 per person, per night). If you want to be in the heart of Masai Mara, try the intimate Little Governor's Camp, comprising just 17 tents tucked around a watering hole teaming with wildlife. Because of its remote location (you have to cross the Mara River by boat to get there), guests will see giraffes, elephants, and zebra walking nearby (don't worry—guards are on hand should the animals get too close). For an unforgettable bird's eye view of the park, take the hot air balloon safari (pictured above). After floating silently across the plains animal watching, you'll be treated to a champagne breakfast cooked on the balloon's burners. Rates start at $340 per person, per night during high season.

Getting There: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi is the main hub for flights operated by an increasing number of carriers, including British Airways, KLM, and Kenya Airways, the national airline.
