Central and South American honeymoons combine jungle and rain forest with beaches in an alluring, exotic way. You may wake to the sound of monkeys in the trees, see sloths, or spot colorful birds and butterflies darting from branch to branch. And some of the best hotels reflect the natural surroundings, with views of volcanos and lush old-growth forest, as well as designer tree-house rooms that use indigenous materials, thatched roofs, and rope bridges and walkways suspended in the air. You can combine this eco-friendly adventure — rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, bird watching, and even whitewater rafting — with some time on the beach. There, you can drink cocktails and eat ceviche in your bathing suits with sand between your toes while watching the water all day long — for dolphins or whales during the day, and to see the sun dip behind the horizon in the evening.
We're big fans of Costa Rica, where the local coffee starts your day off right, before sun salutations in yoga class. If you and your new hubby have good senses of balance, follow that up with surfing lessons; along with its famous cloud rain forest and national parks, this country is known for its surfing schools.
Belize is another regional favorite, with plenty of gorgeous waterfront property, the second-largest reef in the world, and a couple hundred off-coast islands, along with jungle lodges and Mayan ruins. Bonus: English is the official language here.
And although no South American resorts made the cut this year, there are plenty of chic resorts in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, and Chile that are totally honeymoon-worthy. (Just search Brides.com for proof!)
