Honeymoon in Mykonos
Where to eat, sleep, and play on this romantic Greek island.
Botticelli's erotic The Birth of Venus could well have been set on Mykonos, a tiny island awash in sexuality—both mythological and real. Squeeze through the famously whitewashed, densely packed buildings in Mykonos Town and emerge to discover rocky, secluded coves and beaches that ring the arid island. This geography makes it easy for the hotels—from five-star geometric miracles to intimate three-star gems—to serve up stellar sea views. And partying? Once the annual sweaty summer season kicks into gear, it never stops. Opa!
Seductive Places to Stay
It's hard to find a hotel on Mykonos that isn't sexy, but the Belvedere Hotel (doubles from $290, 30-2289/025-122; belvederehotel.com) ups the ante by inviting risqué behavior with four-poster beds poolside. And this intimate hotel in town only adds to its seductive allure by whitewashing everything from furniture to staff uniforms. Away from the crowds on Psarou Beach, the Grecotel Mykonos Blu (doubles from $359, 30-22890/027-900; grecotel.com) exudes a hip, haute style, combining feng shui with Aegean views from almost everywhere. The Santa Marina Resort & Villas (doubles from $530, 800-325-3589; starwoodhotels.com) has hosted both Oliver and Sharon Stone, and it spices things up for noncelebs, too, with spacious rooms, a peaceful Lotus spa, and a private beach. At the Rhenia Bungalows (doubles from $185, 30-2289/022-300; rhenia-bungalows.com), the vibe may be afternoon-delight mellow, but its location just outside town means the nightly dancefest is nearby.
The Mykonians don't care much for clothes: Topless is standard on most strands, and you can bare it all on Paradise and Super Paradise beaches, then casually tie on a pareo and shake what you got when the sun dips and the dance party gets going. To lose both the throngs and the thongs, go north to gorgeous Panormos or Agios Sostis, where you'll have a stretch of the sandy stuff almost to yourselves.
Totally Indulgent Spa Experiences
It wouldn't be Greece without olives…or olive oil. The national fruit is the centerpiece of the couples' De-Stress Oliva treatment at the Mykonos Grand Hotel & Resort (mykonosgrand.gr). You'll both be rubbed with a sea salt-and-brown sugar exfoliating gel, then coated in warm olive oil and cocoa butter, which are massaged into your skin. The result: two bodies that are smooth, soft, and beyond touchable.
Rest up—Mykonians don't start partying until at least 1 a.m., and then they go at it all night long. Blast off into after-dark action at Space (spacedance.gr), two floors of nonstop DJ-spun debauchery in Mykonos Town that's the place to be seen. Or try Skandinavia, a small but popular club that rivals a Bikram yoga class for working up a sweat.
"Greek Viagra" is what locals call sea urchins. And while these tiny, spiny critters hardly look sexy, they melt like butter in your mouth. Sea Satin in town serves up a delicious sea-urchin salad, with a view and candlelight completing the seductive mood. Finish off with another sexy Greek treat: honey-soaked baklava at Niko's Tavern, where the sweet bee nectar oozes out over the phyllo dough with every fork-full.
