Maie has always collected rocks from places she visits, so when Jim said he was going to find her the perfect rock during a camping trip at Sequoia National Park, she was shocked to see him return with a diamond ring. Even more surprising was that Jim had flown from their California home to the East Coast to ask her father's permission to marry her and to retrieve her great-grandmother's diamond, which Jim and Maie's friend, a jewelry designer, set into a ring.
The couple's wedding was held the following fall on a friend's private estate in Windham, New York. With mountains of beautiful foliage as their backdrop and a sprinkling of leaves lining the grass, the couple enjoyed the last bit of warm weather as they celebrated their special day.
Many of the couple's guests contributed to the celebration-Maie's mother, a florist, created all the flower arrangements, while Jim's friend played the guitar as the soon-to-be-newlyweds walked down the aisle. Even the bride, who owns her own design company, got involved, creating all the stationery for the day. "Everyone had a little piece of the day," says Maie. "It really made everything seem so homegrown and personal."
