As you might expect when a globe-trotting travel editor is involved, Lexi’s July 2006 wedding to Ernesto was all about location, location, location. The laid-back pair, who met while working at a lifestyle Web site almost a decade ago, bypassed the glam Manhattan wedding scene and settled instead on the Onteora Mountain House, near the Catskill Mountain town of Woodstock, New York.
Lexi and Ernesto exchanged vows that they’d penned themselves—"My hardest writing assignment ever!" declares the bride—on the inn’s spacious, 90-foot deck, surrounded by cathedral-height fir trees, as eagles soared and brilliant rays of sunlight streamed down from the sky. From there, it was on to the open-sided pavilion, where the 70 guests took shelter from a brief rainstorm before savoring a dinner that included brown-rice truffle-mushroom risotto and chemical-free sea scallops prepared by New World Home Cooking, a restaurant that specializes in the kind of organic, sustainable cuisine that’s near and dear to this eco-minded twosome’s hearts.
Blue was the focus of Lexi’s country color scheme, but it certainly wasn’t the mood of the crowd, as jubilant guests danced to lively iTunes playlists from the couple’s laptop; Ernesto had divided the songs into "dinner," "post-dinner," and "throwdown" to keep things hopping in the woodsy setting. "The beautiful thing about the day," recalls Lexi, "was that time seemed to stop for a little while up in the mountains. Nature was totally in charge."—Hillary Quinn
Our Favorite Things
Pencil Me In: In lieu of traditional stationery, the creative couple designed their own programs, note cards and invitations, which included a "fun map" of the area, hand-drawn by Ernesto.
Ladies Who Lunch: Lexi treated her bridesmaids to spa massages, manicures and a lively Mexican meal prior to the wedding. "There were only two of them, so I was able to really splurge," says the bride, who also gave her friends necklaces, tailored to each girl’s personal style, that were made by local artists.
A Peak Moment: In honor of the pair’s passion for travel, guest tables were named after mountains they’d visited together, including Big Sur’s Santa Lucia range and New Zealand’s Remarkables.
With This Ring: Always one to step off the beaten path, Lexi donned a Hawaiian toe ring, purchased on one of her many work excursions, as her "something blue."
