San Franciscans Katherine and Christopher had one major reason for marrying in Cabo San Lucas, and it wasn't the town's legendary nightlife, renowned golf greens or luxury hotels. "Chris really wanted to get married someplace that was sentimental to us," says Katie. Cabo, where the couple vacationed early in their relationship, brought back those first feelings.
The bride and groom spent their June wedding day on the grounds of the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort, but were determined to avoid each other until the ceremony. "We divvied up the two pool areas," says Katie. "I would stay at one and Chris at the other." Over at Katie's pool, bride and father practiced their dance. At Chris's, a game of Ping-Pong was on.
That night, their nondenominational ceremony was held on the beach under a bamboo chuppah. "Chris and I picked out exactly where we wanted to be wed—a perfect spot with rocks in the background, plus an elegant, dramatic walkway that led to the beach." Later, the poolside reception feast featured beef tenderloin and mahimahi, but food took a backseat to the evening's real priority—dancing and margaritas. The couple set up an outdoor nightclub by the patio, with white couches for resting between sets and a DJ imported from San Francisco to keep everybody on their feet. What a great way to start a marriage: a little tequila, a lot of good tunes and plenty of dancing in the moonlight. —Leigh Newman
3 Things Katie Learned
Scout It Out: Katie made two exploratory trips to Cabo: one with Chris to choose the hotel, and then another with her wedding planner to find vendors. "People have to see you to understand your passion."
Leave Your Shoes at Home: "I had a pair of flip-flops, but they were more annoying than anything!" Katie got tired of emptying sand out of them and kicked them off at the reception—she suggests that other beachy brides go barefoot.
Celebrate the Area: Katie's rehearsal dinner showcased Baja cuisine and a mariachi band; her wedding cake was a tres leches confection. "It wove in a bit of Mexico."
