Jaysri and Chris were close friends for nine years, but Jai was hesitant to take their relationship further because of their cultural differences. She is Indian, while Chris is Puerto Rican and German, and she believed her parents would be against her marrying someone with a different background. "People joked that we were the real-life Romeo and Juliet," she says. When she finally followed her heart, she was delighted to discover that her parents supported the relationship. "I didn't give them enough credit," she says.
On December 28, Jai went to Chris' house to open Christmas gifts. The final package contained an engagement ring. "I was shocked," Jai recalls. "I was laughing and crying at the same time." According to Hindu tradition, major life events should take place during "auspicious moments," determined by a Hindu priest. According to Jai's family's priest, August 28, 2004—between 4 and 5 p.m.—would be auspicious for Jai, so the couple planned their event accordingly.
