Deborah may be a busy Boston lawyer, but even this workaholic can pause long enough to take a hint. After a two-year engagement but with no wedding preparations in place, her fiancé, William, came home one night and presented Deborah with a wedding planning book. "He was so cute; he asked, 'Will this help?'" When she answered, "Only if you fill it out," he enlisted her sister, Celia, to scout venues with him. Once they homed in on the Boston Harbor Hotel near Faneuil Hall, Deborah got involved. The couple decided on a simple ceremony that wove in Jewish customs; a lavish menu starring filet mignon, squash blossoms and molten chocolate cake; and towering calla lily centerpieces.
Their 95 guests gathered on July 29 for the couple's afternoon vows in the Atlantic Room, with harbor views on three sides; cheers erupted as Will crushed a ceremonial glass under his foot, according to Jewish tradition. At the reception, folks got their funk on to an eight-piece band that rolled out songs from "Hey Ya" to "Sunrise, Sunset," the father-daughter dance. In summation, Deborah had only one objection: "The flowers were so over-the-top and gorgeous, I hated to leave them behind!" —Lexi Dwyer
Our Favorite Things
Standing By: At the beginning of the ceremony, Will, whose parents are deceased, was escorted down the aisle by his younger sister, Colleen. Her dress was gold to match his tie.
Work of Heart: After quizzing the couple about their passions, artist Elaine Adler drew fanciful images on their ketubah (marriage contract), including the scales of justice (for Deborah), a rugby ball (for Will), and a dog (their beloved boxer mix, Lucy).
Take the Cake: At the end of the night, guests took home two mini tiers layered with passion fruit buttercream.
The Guy's a Gem: As a wedding gift, Will bought Deborah a dazzling "shake" necklace (a sizable crystal pendant filled with loose diamonds) by jeweler-to-the-stars Renee Lewis. It paired perfectly with her gown, "but looks good with everyday clothes, too," the happy bride reports.
