Amy met Josh at St. Lawrence University in May 1998—just two weeks before she graduated. Smitten, the couple pursued a long-distance relationship. Amy took a job in Manhattan and lived at home to help care for her ill father, while Josh finished school and lived in the dorms. The couple became even closer when Amy's father passed away during their second year together. As soon as he graduated, Josh relocated to New York. "He's not a city person," Amy says. "All his friends said, 'I can't believe you're moving.' That's when I knew it was love."
In December 2001, Josh treated Amy, an avid golfer, to a long weekend at the Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida. On their third night there, he proposed on the beach. Josh got down on one knee and told Amy how happy he would be to take care of her. If her father could be there, Josh said, he knew he would be proud, too. Amy's reaction might have been startling to most, but not to Josh. "I sort of tackled him," she says. "I was so excited."
