Two years after she was the sufferer of gun violence, previous Ariz. Rep. Giffords -- along with her former astronaut husband Mark Kelly -- has introduced an initiative that takes aim at the nation's powerful gun lobby. Gun violence solutions encouraged

Giffords and Kelly made the announcement on Tuesday, Jan 8 in an interview with ABC -- exactly two years after Giffords was shot in the head in a mass shooting outside of a Tucson grocery store.

Giffords is really upset with all the gun violence and is tired of it as a gun owner herself. Since her shooting, the country has dealt with other shooting incidents, such as the large one in Connecticut and the other large one in Colorado.

The basic idea of the initiative is to encourage elected officials to come up with better solutions to prevent gun violence. It is called Americans for Responsible Solutions.

Making guns harder to get

The group seeks to raise cash to lobby for legislation that will make guns more challenging to acquire. Specifically, it wants to mandate background checks for private gun sales and find ways of accessing the mental health of would-be gun buyers, among other efforts.

The National Rifle Association will fight against the initiative very hard and has a lot of money to battle with. The NRA spent 11 times more on lobbying than all gun control lobby groups combined last year, according to Reuters.

USA Today explained that Giffords has promised an enormous increase in anti-gun violence group lobbying to beat out the competition.

Could be a good time to begin

However, the nation may well be softening its stance on hand gun ownership following the shooting in Newtown that took the lives of 20 children, some as young as six-years-old, and six adult teachers and administrators.

A few things being considered right now are a national collection of gun sales and background checks for all purchases. Another thing that is being considered is a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity clips and magazines. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are both looking into ways to lower gun violence.

More people purchasing guns

The FBI publicized that there has been an enormous increase in consumer gun sales since the country started getting interest in gun control again.
