Engagement Party Woes :(

So I feel like I'm in a jam, and I would like to hear some feedback from others...

My mother and I have been talking about throwing an engagement party sometime closer to the summer. I have just been recently engaged, and my fiance and I won't be getting married for just over 2 years.

There's a slight problem though...

My mother wants to rent a hall, have a dj, have it catered, and invite those outside of my immediate family.

My fiance and I only want something small (strictly speaking my immediate family meeting his--no extended cousins and the like) and we were thinking of a backyard barbecue. Nothing particularly fancy.

I'm afraid that my mom won't budge about this. I mean, an engagement party is just really to celebrate an engagement! The huge celebration is the wedding. I personally don't want a big to-do and neither does my fiance.

Am I sounding selfish? I'm just afraid my mom will take over without really considering what my fiance and I feel about it. I'd really appreciate any feedback.

I quite agree with you！ I also think that an engagement party should only need to invite relatives to participate, without much more pomp!Just share your happiness,that's enough!
