Thanks, Cassiopia. I'm rather fond of it myself, LOL.

It aint right that a woman picks her ring, but then I've read stories that she was so disssapointed with the ring that she wanted to return it, so you never know what to do.

I bought our rings @

I would much rather choose my own ring and spoil the surprise than end up with something I would never have picked out myself. I do have a particular taste. I hate solitares unless the band has some sort of engraving (I think solitares on plain bands are too plain). I don't like round cuts, they're too overdone and common. I don't wear yellow gold. 10K gold breaks me out and practically makes my skin peel off. I find rings that are large to be annoying and unwearable, and I don't want a diamond.

So if my guy didn't believe in letting me choose, there is a very good chance I would get something I didn't like.

Cat--love your ring! Very unique. LilTuffGirl--love the side view of your ring, too.

Here's mine. My hands look like I work outside all the time even though I don't, so please excuse them. I do love my ring, though. I originally wanted a solitaire and sometime wish I'd picked one, but my then-FH and I went shopping together, and this was the most unique one we found that was in a style I liked, and we both fell in love with it. It's past-present-future, but the "past" and "future" are made of three little diamonds each and they make a sort of heart shape on either side of the center diamond.

I didn't know for sure which one DH bought, though, so when he proposed I was still surprised. It was fun shopping together.

I picked out my ring too. At first it was browsing the stores than I found "the one". The saleswoman came and told us there was a percent off of the diamond jewelery that day and then if he opened a card there, that there would be more off of that. so it was a sealed deal the ring was originally $2,800 and after the discount it ended up being $2,500. = ) it is a 1ct. three stone ring with 6 side diamonds they are colorless and certified!.

I was proposed to without a ring so that we could shop for it together. I don't think an engagement is any less special if there is no ring right there at that time! It was only a few days before I had it on my finger! :)

I got to pick out my own ring cause he wanted to know what was my style and such. After picking mine out in the store he went out and bought it two weeks later. But his trick was to have me pick out several rings Iliked that way itll be a surprise which one he would get. That was a great thing too!!

FH and I designed my ring together. We have a very close family friend who is a jeweler, so he worked with both of us, and I LOVE my ring! We had to go to St. Louis to meet with him, which is where my extended family lives, so lucky FH got to combine ring shopping with the pleasure of meeting ALL of my aunts, uncles, and cousins for the first time, lol.

I've never been able to take a good pic of it on my finger, but I have the pics from the jeweler. I have no idea why they are on this ugly fuzzy stand!!

FH and I custom designed our rings. He wanted a set that went together. I wasn't set on diamonds, but wanted something unique. We looked at many designs, solitare, past/present/future, etc....

His ring looks like mine when it is all together. The bands have our initials joined together with a celtic knot. Each set of initials is seperated by a celtic cross. We had 4 diamonds on each side - one for each of our children in support of our wedding. We choose a purple sapphire - both of our favorite colors is purple. It is unique and very much US.

I have extremely particular taste. That's the polite way of saying, I throw a temper tantrum if I don't get exactly what I want! (Actually this xmas, I picked out a certain purse I wanted, but FH lost the picture and I must say he did very well on picking out a similar style on his own - with the help from the saleslady and every other random woman he asked that walked by!)

Anyway, we went ring hunting together about two weeks ago because I wanted something very specific. I picked out a setting I liked, and tried it with a 2.02 and a 3.01 cushion cut center stone. The setting was a pave ring with diamonds encircling the center stone. He was really glad we did that because he had no idea about my taste at all before that. He then decided to meet with a second jeweler on his own on the quest to find a better quality diamond (yay) and he decided he trusts the second guy more than the first. The only problem was that the man didn't have the size and cut of diamond we want in stock so he had to put an order in for some more diamonds. FH will be going back this week to finalize things, but in the meantime has let me pick my setting. I'm not positive what center stone I'll be getting, but I know its going to be in the 2-3 carat range.

Here's a picture of the setting from tacori.com:

Christine - I have heard of a lot of couples doing something similar to you, but I think it would have made me uncomfortable. I wanted to pick out my setting with FH, but I didn't want him to feel like he had to buy a stone that was a certain amount of carats, or spend however much money. Since the bulk of the cost of the ring is the diamond, not the setting, we designed the setting together, but beyond saying I preferred a princess cut I had nothing to do with picking out the center diamond. It was also nice because it made a part of my ring a surprise when I got it :) I don't know, I just would have felt uncomfortable saying "I want at least 2-3 carats" since that's tantamount to saying "I want you to spend at least 15k-20k on the ring."

Edit: I just realized that what I typed may have seemed pretty harsh, and I didn't mean it to be. I think your ring is beautiful, and if you and your FH are comfortable with shopping like that together, yay for you. But since the OP asked about how shopping together works, I was just trying to point out that there are vastly varying levels of shopping for a ring together, from just going to some stores to get an idea of different styles to picking a setting but not a stone, to picking the whole thing out together.

To answer the question, I did...but I didn't-- if that makes sense.

DH just asked one day what type of jewelry I liked and eventually we got around to rings. I stated I liked simple jewelry "like solitaires". My engagement ring was just that-- the only thing is I would have chosen princess cut instead of round, but i LOVE it just the same.

I think it's a little weird to go to the store to actually pick one out. On one hand, you get exactly what you ask for, but on the other hand I think it takes the element of a surprise proposal away-- you KNOW you're getting engaged and you're just waiting vs. being shocked that you are engaged.

Yeah, there can totally be a surprise proposal without a ring! I've heard of people proposing with a "token" ring (a cheap ring that is a stand in until the couple picks one out together). When my dad proposed he bought the diamond he wanted for my mom, and the store just set it in the plainest solitaire setting. Then he took her back to pick out what kind of setting she wanted together.
