NWR: Anyone familar with Colposcopy / LEEP / HPV? (i got my results)
Posted: Sep 22, 2008 11:38 PM

The week before the wedding I went in for a gyno exam, since I had never had one before and wanted to get on birth control. They did all the basic annual exam stuff, including the pap smear. The doctor took a sample of something she little noticed, said it might be a little bit of a yeast infection or it could be nothing serious due to the fact that i was ovulating then.

I got a call today at work from the office, saying my pap results came back and that they wanted to schedule me for a Colposcopy next month since they found some white blood cells on my cervix. They said pending on how the Colposcopy goes, they might need to do a biopsy to remove the cells or just keep doing more regular pap smears to check up on it.

I looked it up on WebMD when I got home just to find out more information but I'm a little freaked out as this whole deal with the gyno is new to me to begin with. DH says I'll be fine and I haven't told my mom yet cuz I don't want to freak her out thinking I'm dying or having cervical cancer, but I'm a little scared, as the process looks like an extended pap smear with the metal clamp thingy and all and that was uncomfortable!

has anyone else had a similar situation happen to them? am i completely overreacting? any advice?

thanks ladies

****UPDATE 10/17****

so I got my results today

In one of the 3 samples they took to examine, there was nothing.

In another sample there was mild dysplasia.

In the 3rd sample there was moderate dysplasia.

Basically, it's a growth on my cervix, but not cancerous. If it's not treated and becomes severe, then it can eventually become cancerous but right now it's not cancerous.

So he wants to schedule me for a LEEP procdure where they go in with this metal prong that has like 500 watts of electricity on the end and cuts off the growth. He also wants to remove a very small sample to get a better view of the inside of the cervix tissue and make sure it hasn't spread further, as they weren't able to tell much from the sample he took during the biopsy.

He wants to do it right before my next period, as it has a better chance of healing correctly when I won't be dry and then have me come in once a week for 3 weeks straight to check on it and make sure it hasn't closed up. Then I have to do regular pap smears every 6 months for 3 years.

Can't have sex with DH for 3 weeks after and it's not recommended to get pregnant til at least 8-9 months after the procedure's done.

He said dysplasia is a virus. I asked him what the main cause of it is - he told me HPV. So apparently I have HPV and had no clue! And if I have it, that means DH has it too. I read on WebMD that in most cases HPV goes away after 2 years, but these abnormal cell growths are a result of HPV. They say most people who get it will most likely not even know they have it.

I've only had 2 partners - DH and my ex which I used a condom with everytime. The doctor said it doesn't matter if a condom was used - you get HPV from skin to skin contact, including areas the condom might not cover. DH was tested for STD right when we started dating, but the doctor said since it's a virus, it most likely wouldn't show up in an STD test. My ex had 1 other partner before me - they were both virgins at the time, but I don't know if he was still sleeping with her at the time she started cheating on him (he said they only did it a few times and he found out she was cheating on him soon after) so there's a chance she got it from this other guy and passed it onto him. DH's had 5 before me and if I got it from him, he could have gotten it from anyone of those girls.

Right now, I feel so... I don't even know. Ashamed? Frustrated? Confused? Granted my sex education wasn't much - I went to a private school all my life before college and we were told 'dont do it' - I thought using a condom was almost foolproof when it came to STDs - that's why they make you think, right? I had no idea I could contract this using a condom!

DH said it's just something we'll get through, as we both probably have it (which I'm confused - if we remove the abnormal cell growths, but he still has it, won't I get it again? And will we ever get rid of it if we're passing it back and forth between each other?)

I just talked to my MoH though and found out she had the exact same thing awhile back, sometime after high school and had the same procedure done, so I'm not too worried - she's had a kid since and said the growths haven't returned since they went in with the LEEP and removed them... still not too thrilled about having the HPV though...

Do not worry about it! I had it done and it was nothing. It was a piece of cake! Yes it is uncomfortable just like a pap, but it doesn't take very long and it is worth it to make sure you are ok. When I had it done, they just put this yellow mustard looking stuff on my cervix so they could get a good look and then used a special light. They did a little more during mine but nothing hurt and I was good to go. I didn't tell my mom either because I didn't want to freak her out. If you need anything, you can PM me. But really it is not that bad, just uncomfortable. But the more you go to the gyno, the more comfortable you will get!

thanks for comment!

so basically, it's just to get a 2nd look at the cervix then? i was freaking out a little bit cuz i wasn't sure if it was a big deal or really that serious or if it was just a precautionary thing they do if anything abnormal shows up on the pap.

well it's good to know that it's probably nothing too serious then!

I can't say if it is or isn't anything serious... I thought you were just asking about the procedure itself. I can say the procedure was very easy and not painful at all. It is a precautionary thing because your test came back with something funky. The colposcopy will allow the Dr to get a better look and determine if what he or she saw was serious. I wouldn't stress too much about it though at this point. Have the colposcopy done and then see what happens.

One of the most frightening times in a woman's life is when the gynecologist calls and says her Pap smear results are abnormal. Although you might think an abnormal Pap smear means you have cervical cancer, the fact is that the majority of abnormal Pap smears are not caused by cervical cancer. The more likely cause of abnormal Pap smear results is inflammation or a vaginal infection.

I don't know what your results will be but just breath and go with it.

HUGS and good thoughts going your way - odds are you are fine, but they have to check you out.

HUGS again and good thoughts.

Thanks PharmToxGirl!

I've been reading on WebMD too and they said the same thing you did - having an abnormal pap smear could most likely be an infection or something... i just wish i knew what the importance of the white blood cells on there meant =/

i had it done. i was so scared my mom came with me but it turned out to be fine.

i understand the fear though, when your mind starts working it automatically goes to the worst case scenario!

good luck!  lots of women get this done and it turns ok so keep thinking positive!

Hey, I had this done too - I actually thought it was pretty cool that a doctor can see inside my uterus! Anywho - it wasn't painful at all, just a wee bit awkward.

I hope everything went well for you too!

it may or may not be serious.  During mine she decided to take 7 biopsies and I was freaking!!  Yes, that IS uncomfortable but necessary if he/she thinks they see something.  Luckily mine turned out to just be inflammation.  It is the first step if your PAP comes back abnormal.  Then biopsies, then further measures...

Thanks everyone for your kind words!

DH decided to come along and wait in the waiting room (where he got to watch Monsters, Inc while he waited, lol) when I called from work talking about how nervous I was and in just in case I didn't feel good enough to drive home afterwards (mom thought someone should come with me and she said she'd go if he didnt and I really didn't want her tagging along to the gyno - that's just awkward for me).

The doctor was able to tell right away whether or not it looked cancerous - he said it looked 'nowhere near cancerous' so that was a relief! he did snip off 3 samples though during the biopsy, which I opted to have him give me the numbing shots (which 1 of them hurt a lil!), and he took a swab sample too. It was mostly just an uncomfortable 5-10min procedure, with him talking me through what he was doing - he said i did good, even though I was wincing and gripping the edge of the table/chair the whole time.

I felt a little weak afterwards - they had me lay there for about 10 min before I got up and dressed and i felt a little dizzy and cold/clammy but probably cuz i have low blood sugar issues and it sounded like i had a lot of bleeding during the procedure. DH drove me to get some food afterwards and took me home. we've been laying around watching tv all evening and im feel a little more comfortable than I did (if i made sudden movements it hurt a little bit).

i meeting with the doctor next week to get the results and go over them and discuss where we go from there. hopefully it's nothing too bad, since we're pretty sure it's not cancerous!

Thats a bummer that it hurt. When I had mine done my doctor also did the biopsy at that time. But I wasn't offered anything to numb it. I did't feel any pain at all though. I had some bleeding afterwards, but not too bad. I drove myself there and was fine right away, just a little worried about what the results would say. How do you like having a male doctor? I don't think I could ever have a male doctor. I don't know why, they just creep me out I guess.

i actually had a woman doctor the first time i went in for the annual exams, which is what i prefer. i wasn't thrilled about having a male doctor, but he's their specialist on staff when it comes to doing the colposcopys and biopsys so i didn't really have a choice - he had a female assistant who was in the room though writing stuff down and overseeing so that made me feel a little more comfortable, but still... i prefer the female doctors for gyno stuffs (our family doctor was a guy).

I know exactly how you are feeling. When I got my results back, I was and still am ashamed. I have only been with 2 people and I was with both of them for a long time. My first relationship was 5 1/5 years(we were both virgins) and the second is with FH(4 1/2 years). I cringe every time the HPV commercials come on. I even told my doc that I was not promiscuous ad I don't understand how this could have happened. She just said that at some point almost everyone will come in to contact w/ HPV and not to worry. But it is easier said then done. I recovered very well from my LEEP. It wasn't a plesant experience for me though. I really didn't like my doc. I am actually terrified right now. My last pap was about 14 months ago and it came back abnormal, but my doc wanted me to see if my body would fight it off. So she told me to come back in 6 months. Well my insurance ran out at month 5. I just finally got insurance again through my work. I go to the Dr. tomorrow and I am scared they will need to do the LEEP again. My old dr assured me though that I would be fine to have children. So I guess I will just have to play the whole thing out and see how it goes. Hang in there girl. It will be ok. If you need to chat you can PM me. I also reccommend joining a support group online. I did and it really hepled me because I was too ashamed to talk to my family or friends about any of this.
