Yes, some sort of resonable explanation and an apology would be nice. However, I just learned from my fsil that when she called them to explain that her fh broke of the engagement and that she would not need them to hold her date (mind you, this was done over a year in advance) they were extremely rude to her and showed no empathy at all. Apparently (I did not know this until today), when my fmil told her that they had agreed to transfer the deopoist my fsil was very surprised, and told her mom that they didn't seem like the kind of company that would do something so nice. So, I guess I should not be surprised.
If they won't give your day pick another day. How about your bachorlette party? Or your bridesmaids lunchenon. At least you can recover some of the money. Have the owner put in writing that they have that deposit for you. Redeem at anytime
