we thought about promise rings, but we didn't really see a point in it. i mean, we want to get married and we both know it, but i'd rather have that promise in the form of an engagement ring and not a "promise" ring. i mean, isn't the whole point of an engagement an intent and promise to marry? it just seemed kind of redundant to me.

Well in my culture before a guy and a girl get engaged the guys whole family has to come to the girls and they have to ask for the girl to be with their son. Then the girl gets a promise ring to signify that she is "with" a boy so that other guys know that she is off the market. So my FH actually proposed with my promise ring before we fulfilled our cultural things. I get my real ring at the engagement party bc in our culture we receive a blessing over us and the rings. complicated i know but i got a beautiful promise ring and an engagement full of tradition

i think they are cute for younger couples who might have the intent but not the finances.

My culture has the same tradition where my FH proposes to be in a ceremony in front of both families. We scheduled the 'engagement' about two months in advance. Didn't really do the promise ring thing, but I actually ended up wearing one ring for the two months that he gave me last Valentine's, so that acted as the promise ring until the day of the engagment ceremony.

My fiance had gotten me a Promise ring about 6 months into our relationship. We knew that we loved each other and that we would get married, but it was (as he said) a place holder for the diamond when he could afford it.

I love my tumb ring soo much if it wasn't so wide i would wear it as my wedding band! I dont call it a promise ring i just call it my tumb ring, but i guess thats what it is.... Although we formaly never gave one to each other as a "promise ring" I wanted a tumb ring and he ended up with one at the end as well it was never supose to have anything symbolic in it, it just happened We both got one they are just simple gold bands with our names and a saying engraved on them, i wear mine on my tumb and he wears his around his neck on a gold chain since its too small (oops) So it is but the intention of it becoming one never was there in the begining

I got a promise ring on our 2nd anniversary. It was completely right for us because he moved away a month later to go to school. I was too young to be engaged then, but knew he was the one for me. It was just nice to have that reminder that he still loved me even though he was so far away! Now 3 years later I am so ready to get married! :)

I recieved a promise ring, however mine was a sign of commitment to the relationship, since he had a history of cheating. We've been friends for over five years now, but when we started dating I had uncertanties about it. He gave the ring to me to show that he was serious about us, and that it wouldn't just be another fling to add to a list. I gave him a ring shortly after, and he says he considers it his own personal engagement ring since he's given me my engagement ring.

My fiance and I have been together since we were 15, and he gave me a promise ring for Christmas after we'd been toether about 15 months. He asked me to "go out with him forever". I can't honestly say that I was convinced of us getting married at that point, but he still swears that he knew it. Smile Fast foward another year, I realized that I may only be 17 but this was the man I'm going to spend the rest of my life with!

Anyway,We also talked about how it represented our promise to remain abstinent before marriage and it made the ring all the more special. Anyway, he proposed this past September (on the 5 year anniversary of the day we met) and I moved that promise ring over to my ring finger on my right hand. Laughing

My FH got me a promise me ring and asked me to marry him about a month short of our one year. We know been together for a little over two years. I'm 18 (I'll be 19 next month) and FH is 19, we decided to wait two more years until we are both 21, I am done with college and are more financially sound to get married. We have set the date for July 29, 2010, which is the same day that we first me. He is my soul mate and the love of my life, and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with him. He hasn't officially proposed with engagement ring but we know we want to get married and have discussed all the wedding details. The promise ring is our personal way of acknowledging our love and commitment to each other and our promise to get married in the future.

I got a promise ring for our 2nd month anniversary.  We had been talking online for about 6 months and had been together long-distance for those 2 months.  I got my engagement ring on our 6 month anniversary....

My bf and I have been together for 5 1/2 years and he has never gotten me any type of ring, I always told him not to bother with buying me a promise ring, just save the money for my engagement ring! In my experience everyone I know that's gotten a "promise" ring have broken up...

We did a promise ring first because we saw it as an opportunity to be engaged "just between us." We wanted a period to adjust to our future together and iron out any bumps before the stress of planning and having our families stressing and inputting on everything impacted us. That way before we went into the formalities of telling everyone and everything, we felt as though we were an even more united front!
