Help!! Does anyone know of any good memorial poems??
Posted: Mar 26, 2007 5:37 PM

Hi all. I am drawing a complete blank here.  I want to honor my father who died when I was 14, and my grandmother who passed in 2004.  In lieu of favors I am donating money to The American Heart Association (Dad), The Alzheimers Association (grandma) and the ASPCA (a cause I firmly belive in).  My engagement ring is the one my father gave my mother, my parents were also divorced (when I was 4), and my wedding date is my grandmothers birthday which I picked specifically. I think I am going to have 2 candles on a table with their pictures at the reception, but I was looking for a poem or some kind words to put on my programs/reception tags to explain why there are no favors and that donations were made in their memory.  Anyone have any ideas???  Thanks ladies!

172 days...can't believe it!!

Great...I'm on the phone with my mother and she doesn't think doing the pictures and candles on the table is a bad idea. She thinks it will be too sad. I can't believe she doesn't understand how I feel or where I am coming from.

I think it is a great idea! My fiances parents (his grandparents who adopted him as a child) both passed away. We are lighting candles and putting up pictures of them at the reception.

There's a fine line between remembering loved ones and making your wedding into a memorial service--just a thought in reference to your Mom. Do what you wish to do about donations (as far as substituting them for favors, you don't even have to explain if you don't want to--you can do this privately--and nobody will miss the favors). If you do wish to explain, a very brief note in your program should do it. As for memorial poems, you might want to check out Alfred Lord Tennyson's group of poems, "In Memorium." You probably have heard the most famous line, "'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all," check the exact quotation.

i am doing the same thing! i decided on this poem for my father,

Dad
On the Wings of Love
Though your Dad is now an angel
He's left heaven for a while
He's here to share your Wedding Day
And walk you down the aisle.

We havnen't decided on a poem for his grandmother yet.

I dont think having candles in memory is a bad idea I think its really sweet. Me and FH are going to make a special candle that will be lit after the mothers light the seperate candles this canfle is going to represent FH brother who died in a car accident last year and wont be able to be there to be best man. It will be sad to light that candle but at the same time it shows that he is there with us. Do what you want dont have your moms opinion change what you want to do cause i think its great!

For my daughters wedding I too want to put my husbands ( her dads ) and my fathers picture up on the table alongside the memorial candle I am having with their names on it. Boy I THOUGHT it was a good idea but when I ran it across both my sons and my daughter they all three said no that is morbid and it would make everyone sad then we would have people everywhere crying. I think I am still going to do it anyway.

I came up with this saying to add to the dedication page of our program:

"On this day, we lovingly remember those who are close and dear to our hearts and in our thoughts; who are no longer with us but will never be forgotten:

Name, Relationship to couple"

We have several family members to add to the list but I thought it would be a nice way to remember everyone that we love that are no longer with us without changing to mood of the event.

We plan on using a fireplace as a backdrop for the ceremony and then also as part of the decorations for the reception and putting framed pictures of among others signifigant people we've lost my dad and FH's grandma. Also we're probably going to frame this poem I found somewhere --

In Memory Of All Those
Who Aren't With Us Today....
*
We thought of you with love today
but that is nothing new, We thought
about you yesterday and the days
before that too. We think of you in silence.
We often speak your name.
Now all we have are the memories
and your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake,
with which we'll never part.
God has you in his keeping,
we have you in our hearts.
