Aisle runner for outdoor wedding?
Posted: Feb 12, 2007 4:19 PM

I am having an outdoor fall themed wedding on October 13, 2007 and was planning on scattering leaves down the aisle in lieu of an aisle runner.  I would then have guests get into their seats from the outside in.  I spoke with my MOH and her mom this weekend and they think I HAVE to have an aisle runner so my dress doesn't get soiled. I'm afraid that the aislerunner is going to give a little since it would be placed on grass, not a hard stone patio or something like that.  I'm afraid someone's shoes (probably mine I'm a spazz) will get caught in it and they will trip.  Do I need an aisle runner?  I don't want my dress to get soiled either.  Any thoughts?

I am also having an outdoor wedding and thought about an aisle runner as well but have decided against it. I also have the fear that I will trip over it or that my shoe will poke a hole right through. I like the idea of everything being natural. I am aligning the aisle with potted plants in front of each aisle of chairs.

What sort of shoes are you wearing to walk down the "aisle" in? I can't seem to find the right shoe for an outdoor wedding. I want something with a heel but no more than 2 inches tall.

I am also having an outdoor wedding and am afriad of the runner so I am lining the edges of the aisle with ivy and balls of daisies to mark the "pews" (really cool idea I saw in a brides magazine a year ago you just take a ball of florist foam and stick the flowers into it all the way around if I could find the pic on the site I would post it, but it is really pretty) this also saved me a lot of money because I don't need "pew" bows or bouquets with it.  For a fall themed wedding you could line the edge with leaves and use pumpkins instead of balls of flowers.  And I found the perfect shoes.  Ballet flats at Davids Bridal and they are cheap! Even dyed to match my dress for free (my dress is pale ivory)

You're right--runners on grass can be dangerous. Your idea about fall leaves will be lovely. do you have your dress yet? If not, look for something that does not drag on the ground if you're worried about soil--no train, perhaps a narrower style.

I'm having an outdoor wedding as well and decided right away that a runner just wasn't going to cut it.  I am a complete klutz (almost fell on my face on the way across the stage when I graduated college!) and it just wouldn't work.  I think that the leaves sound like a beautiful idea.  Also, I don't remember who it was, but there was a pic on here with a gorgeous gown with pickups and the bride had flower petals caught in all of the little dips in her gown.  It was so pretty.  If you have pickups, that would look beautiful with the leaves instead of flower petals.

I agree with the other ladies - an aisle runner on grass is not a good idea.  I am getting married on the grass, and the woman who handles weddings there says inthe past people have tried it, and it did not work at all - people trip, it bunches up, etc.  So I am just having rose petals on the aisle.  I think your idea of the scattered leaves is great!

I agree with everyone else - I am also getting married outside, and the wedding coordinator for the vineyard (our venue) advised against an aisle runner for all the reasons all the other ladies said.  Anyone have any ideas for lining the pews at a small vineyard wedding?  My colors are purple, champagne, and gold.  I like some of the other ideas posted here.

Yay!  I love having other fall brides to discuss my plans with!  I thought about it and opted to NOT have a aisle runner...scattered leaves will be beautiful on their own.  I am having 12 wrought iron candleabras line the aisles and then we will be getting married under a wrought iron archway that will be adorned with fall leaf garland I got for 99 cents (can I get an AMEN?!?) on Ebay and it's very realistic looking.  My dress has a chapel lengh train, but I'm taking my chances....I only get one day to be the princess and having everything the way I want it.  My color is deep dark red...Alfred Angelo's calls it Claret and that's where we are getting the Bmaids dresses.  I am letting all the girls pick their own style as long as it's my color.  My dress is from Mori Lee...here's the link: http://www.morilee.com/DressDetail.aspx?C=1&D=2105&P=1

I cannot wait...Can you guys?  There's so much to do though.

I'm getting married outdoors as well but in May 2008. I was thinking of using an aisle runner because I'm afraid that since it will be in spring the ground might be wet and I don't want to ruin my dress. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to prevent this without using and aisle runner?

Wow, it looks like I'm the only outdoor bride using an aisle runner! =) We are not getting married on grass though, it is on concrete and my wedding planner said something about using double sided tape or something to hold it down. Also we are lining the aisle with topiaries and there will be bunches of rose petals along the edges as well as scattered on the runner.

We're having an outdoor wedding in Fall and using an aisle runner... however we've formed a plan to get around the tricky issue of tripping/bunching and it'll cost minimal money to do because our wedding is pretty much going to be Martha Stewart Eat your Heart out (haha).

We're getting plywood from the lumber yard the exact width of the aisle, and then we're going to cover each section with fabric (staple to the backside so it's tight/doesn't slip) and we're using little ties with stakes hidden underneath the chair closest to the aisle to anchor each aisle panel flat against the grass. I can't walk in the grass because my heels will sink in and this was a good solution that surprisingly won't cost us much (about 25 dollars in fact).

I read somewhere that if you want to have an aisle runner at your outside wedding you should wear wedge heels.  They prevent your heel from stabing through the material and help you balance better!

Let's bring this thread back.....I'm having an outdoor wedding and it's our ceremony will be on woodchip/dirt type of ground. I really need some kind of aisle runner but am worried about it from everything that I have been reading. The coordinator at the place we are getting married said that using carpet is flat out ugly and that hardwood won't work unless the ground is even (which ours is not). Someone here mentioned plywood. Does anyone else have any good idea. I really don't want my dress to get destroyed by the dirt. Thanks.
