impresonal indoor hotel receptions

I'm in a predicament because the only reception locations which will hold the number of guests we are planning on having are places like hotels and receptions halls--and I feel like these places are sooo impersonal. I wish I could have my reception at this cute little historical museam in our town, but there's no open space except on the lawn and porch, and our wedding is in December. Any suggestions? How can I make a big reception place more personal?
