The right make up colors/shades?

Okay, I am completely uneducated on the topic of make-up. I spent many years wearing so little make-up, and now I don't exactly know what looks good on me, like what shades or colors.

How do you find this out without going to one of those department store counters or to a Mary Kay type consultant? (It's kind of embarrassing and they always pressure you to buy stuff). I have sensitive skin-- if I use any new lotions, etc, my skin breaks out.

I plan to go to a dermatologist to make sure I'm not allergic to anything.

I have brown eyes, dark blonde/brown hair, semi-fair skin and NO IDEA where to start without buying too much stuff and failing! Help!
