Stuck on choosing a detail on my bridesmaid dresses
Posted: Mar 4, 2012 11:27 PM

Our wedding is going to be a vintage-chic beach theme. I have a variety of different shades of turquoise in my centerpieces etc. So the closest color to turquoise for the bridesmaids dresses i could find was jade, which ends up going pretty well with the color scheme. But i'm stuck on choosing what color satin sash to do for there dresses. My fiance and i first were going to have our wedding during the day at 1pm, but things didn't work out so we ended up going with a 6pm wedding. Besides the different shades of turquoise i have ivory and a touch of a deep pink color in the centerpieces. So overall i was going to have an ivory sash since it was a day wedding and went perfectly with my gown, the beach theme, and mainly just looked great with the jade. Now since it's a night wedding, i'm now debating to have the sash color as black. Which made there gowns seem to fit for the whole night wedding, so i had one my bridesmaids try on a jade dress just to see what the black sash would look like and it definitely made the color pop, but i don't have black anywhere else in the wedding color wise. And the ivory looked great too but still makes me feel that color should be for a day wedding, and mainly because i have more of the ivory tones throughout the ceremony and reception's decorations. Anyone have any thoughts on what i should do for the sash?

Dear CB,

I'm pretty much prejudiced against using black in a wedding for anything except menswear.

When I think of a woman in black, I picture either a funeral or a cocktail party.

Here is my suggestion: Go to a paint store and get a bunch of color chips. Get several chips that come as close as possible to the dress.

Then, go home, cut them apart and mix and match. See what appeals to you, then find out if you can get a sash of that color.

I beg of you, try to avoid the usual "color scheme" that consists of one dominant color and one accent. I went to three chocolate brown and pink weddings right in a row. It takes a bit more creativity to choose a color palette of colors that complement each other and express your wedding vision.

PS: If the paint store is helpful to you, return later when you are redecorating, money in hand.

For vintage-chic? How about something like champagne, gold, or caramel for the sash? I'd consider any of them a more night-time-friendly alternative to ivory, while still going fine with any of the ivory you have in the rest of your decorations. OR, for something that might be an alternative to black, you could maybe play around with like a navy blue or a burgundy (if it doesnt look too Christmasy) or chocolate. I'm a visual person myself... If you're the same way, here's some inspiration pictures of Jade green with various accent colors to help you visualize and brainstorm...
