In China, it is a wedding season in winter. You may say it is so cold in winter, not so good to hold a wedding. While in China, family members and friends only have enough time to gather together in winter, for Spring Festival. People may feel more relaxed at that time. Anyway it has been a custom to hold a Chinese wedding in winter, especially in rural area.
You may have noticed from Chinese TV series or movies that the bride and groom in Chinese wedding gown themselves differently from those in your countries.
At a traditional Chinese wedding, the bride is often seen with a red veil on her head. It covers the brides face. Chinese people call the veil, made of a laced silk square, red head cover. The color red is considered good luck, a strong color that can keep away evil spirits.
From later Jin Dynasty (936-946), a veil became a must for bride at the wedding. But the color of the veil is always red as it is the symbolic color of happiness.
The traditional Chinese wedding dresses in northern China usually is one-piece frock named Qi Pao, embroidered with elaborate gold and silver designs. Brides from southern China usually wear two-piece dress named Qun Gua, Kwa or Cheongsam, also elaborately adorned with golden phoenix and dragon.
The groom's costume is a black silk coat worn over an embroidered dragon robe of dark blue. The headgear is a black hat with red tassels. Nowadays, most grooms wear has been simplified to a set of traditional outfit without the overcoat.
Chinese wedding gown is typically different from western dresses. White is not recommended, while it is a common color for western dresses. Nowadays, Most Chinese people prefer white western dresses, and people in other countries are interested in Chinese wedding dresses.
Whether Chinese or western pattern dress, choosing is a very important decision. The bride should feel special and comfortable in the gown. However one should consider their budgets before making purchase. When ordering a gown, always give one's right measurements.
