Need color advice!
Posted: Sep 21, 2010 12:53 AM

Hi everyone,

My wedding is still about a year and a half away (3/3/2012) but I'm slowly starting to think about style and colors, etc. My favorite flower is the circus rose which is predominately yellow with reddish-orange tips.

I want to use the yellow and reddish-orange of the flower as accent colors. I also want to use a dark or royal purple (my favorite color) as the main color and my FH wants to use navy blue (his favorite color) as a main color.

My problem is that I'm worried that is too many colors and that the dark purple and dark blue will clash especially with an early March wedding.

Any advice or thoughts?

Congrats on the engagement. I think I would wait till a bit closer to decide on colors. You have 1.5yrs, and your ideas will surely change.
I know if we would have gone with the colors I, "always dreamed of," it would look silly in the venue we chose. Collect your thoughts...throw pix in a folder, and make the final decision when it gets a bit closer.
I had a friend who HAD to have green/silver. So, she started shopping ahead of time for things. When they booked the venue, green and silver clashed. So, she ended up buying all new stuff. Waste of money.
Happy Planning!

My thoughts - we used a slate blue as the 'neutral' and bright summer colors as the accents - if you will.

So I can see where you are going, but you are going to have to chose between the navy blue and the purple (there does seem to be too many colors) AND I also agree with dogbride in that you have a LOT of time.

Personally, I took a binder and stuck those plastic page protectors in it. I then tore things out of any magazine that I liked and stuck it in the page protectors. It helps organize your thoughts and keeps you together.

I didn't chose colors until I had chosen my reception hall (I already knew the church) - so waiting until you know for sure where you'll be having the wedding and reception is a good idea.

I'd have to agree, one color has to go. How about navy suits and bridesmaids dresses (very classy, imagine the maids with pearls too?) with the red/yellow in the roses? I think that would be stunning...

dear Meagan,

"My problem is that I'm worried that is too many colors and that the dark purple and dark blue will clash especially with an early March wedding."

I have a different point of view.

So many weddings have one main dominant color and one accent. Everyting is chocolatebrown-pink. When you are planning the wedding, it's only natural to think of everything coordinating.

However... When W-Day actually arrives, you'll find your venue filled with people in various colors of clothing. Your chocolatebrown-pink color scheme will be diluted by all the other colors on all the guests (mostly the ladies).

So... think outside the box. You like a bunch of different colors - USE THEM!

Go to a paint store and get some paint chips of various colors that appeal to you. Cut them apart, then mix and match. Find some combination of colors that suit your needs. Think, also, in terms of where the colors will be. For example, you might use three colors for your cake. No one will say "Oh, dear, the color on her cake did not match the color on the RSVP cards." People will look at the cake and say "Hey, great looking cake!".

Who the heck cares if you have FOUR wedding colors instead of two? I love going to weddings where they have chosen a palette of coordinating colors, rather than the standard one dominant color and one accent.

I can show you pictures that mix these colors and more. Just contact me through my website and I'll send some right out to you. Actually, blue and purple make a nice mix (it all depends on the exact shades of each), so you could think of these as your "main" colors--e.g. navy suits for the men, purple dresses with navy sashes (or vice versa) for the maids, all accented with multi-colored bouquets and centerpieces.

Hi! Your colors sound so pretty =) My colors are mango and turquoise and my wedding is a summer wedding (July 31) but I believe really any colors go together; it's just a matter of how you use them. I work at Sherwin-Williams as a color specialist and the main thing I relay to my clients is to balance your palette with warm and cool colors (if alot of colors are in the mix)

I would definitely choose your venue before you choose your colors. Sometimes you can have colors in mind and then you see this great venue and start to think in a totally opposite direction because they could have some great colors already to work with that just need a little tweaking.

And never 'just settle' for a color! The venue's colors are not meant to hold you back but to simply enhance what you're already envisioning. You can have lots of pretty colors and make them all work well together =)

I just realized that I never thanked y'all for your opinions. I appreciate all of your input and I will definitely keep it all in mind :) We have now chosen our reception venue which is very neutral (thank goodness). So we can pretty much do what we want. As for my color dilemma, I'm trying not to think about it too much right now. In a month or so I'm taking my bridesmaids dress shopping and we will see what color looks best on them and what color their/my favorite dress comes in.

Thanks again!
