I don't think it's too early to start planning! We are getting married in April 2012, and I have already started making plans, picking colors, looking for "The Dress" and etc.... Depending on where You're planning on getting married You might have to book in advance at least 3 months.. Having a budget is key."And You don't have go Broke to have a Day to Remember".... I'm not devoted to trends, they are a nice way to find out what works and doesn't work for You and FH.. This day is Your day enjoy!!

702 days and counting.... I can't wait to be Mrs. Gregory Cummings, Jr.!!

My fiance and I are in the same situation! We're getting married in March of 2012 after I graduate from college. The way we look at is it that the more planning and ideas I have now, the less we'll have to stress over later!! It's definitely not too soon.

I've started some basic planning now (wedding will be 9/10/11) just because it will be easier financially, and I would be a wreck if I had to plan everything in a short amount of time!

We put the deposit down on the reception hall in Feb (it was almost booked up so we had to do it that early) and we're actually going to do our STD's this summer, which from what I've heard is really early, but my fiance's family lives all out of town, and some may actually need a year or so to save/plan for a trip, if they want to come.

We're not following trends or having a traditional wedding, we're doing a reception with a hog roast, so I'm not worried about anything looking dated...I'm probably making my own cake that I saw in a 70's Betty Crocket recipe, so I'm going for vintage anyway, haha!

First off, congratulations. I don't think it's too early to start planning. FH and I are planning to get married July 29th 2012 in Rome. I've started looking at hotels, documentation I need for a destination wedding, wedding dresses, etc. At least you can get an idea of what you do or don't like. I've been planning for quite a while now (a little over a year), so your not alone. Do enjoy your engagement and happy planning.

i don't think its too soon.
im in the same situation as you. my fiance and i want to get married after we graduate from college, so we have about 2 years until the actual wedding. but i've already started planning. the way i see it, i can put more time and effort into the details to ensure that everything is absolutely perfect. i'd rather have lots of time to plan that have to rush through planning 6 months before the wedding.

I am getting married in May 2012. We got engaged Father's Day this year and I am kind of unofficially planning. Its too exciting not to do some things. My current thing is just creating a "lookbook." Some people on here are saying its too early because whats in style won't be when you get married. I think its up to you. I personally have very traditional tastes in wedding dresses, so I don't think what is popular will matter when I actually go to stores. You never know you might find the dress for YOU in this seasons looks but it will be gone by then. I say find what you like. My FH will get overwhelmed if I just ask him about tons of places so I narrow it down to a few I will like and let him pick from those, so it helps to do research now.

**I wish life could be only happy tears without struggles but its not and there is no one else I would rather do it with then him. I <3 G.G.

I am in a similar situation. My fiance and I would rather wait to have the wedding that we want, not just the wedding we can afford, we are looking at a winter 2012 wedding. This has helped lessen the stress on me since I'm still in school. But I've taken a much more relaxed attitude towards the wedding now that I have the time to plan it slowly. And I've already done a bit of planning. I know the location of the wedding and the reception, the "theme", and the colors. While I haven't announced/asked the wedding party yet, I have chosen them (since they are almost entirely family, its not likely to change). I haven't finalized the date yet (its booked tentatively with the locations for a few different dates), but I know it will be the winter of 2012. I have been tossing around ideas for other details, such as decorations, food, and the cake. And while I've looked at dresses, I haven't gone shopping for a dress yet.

I'm not going to lie-- I'm one of those girls who has been planning my wedding in my head since I was little.

When you are more than a year, or two, out, here is my suggestion for planning.

1. Phone a couple of ceremony/reception venues and just ask how far in advance they are booked. Then, make a note as to when you need to nail down a date and book the venue.

Some are booked six months in advance, others a year. Just call and ask. No sense booking something two years in advance, when six months would be OK. You might find something that better suits your needs in the then next year and a half.

2. Get a loose leave notebook and some three-punched folders. Label the folders as appropriate: Dress, flowers, DJ, etc.

Go through the wedding porn, and when you see something you like, just tear out the page and put in your notebook. If you go to an event, and you like the DJ, ask them for a business card, then put that in your notebook. Put your own notes from phone calles in the folders.

Periodically, go through each section and throw away ads that no longer appeal to you.

The idea is to do some research, then nail down your preferences without actually committing any money. When you get closer to W-Day and actually have the bucks in hand, you'll be able to go out and get what you want in a short amount of time. You'll also allow yourself wiggle room to change your mind, often, without it costing you a fortune in unworn dresses, forfeited deposits, etc.

Finally, remember that beautiful weddings can be planned in a short amount of time. You don't really need three years, nor do you need to be "busy" those entire three years with wedding stuff. My own wedding was planned, start to finish, in about 5 months.
