Brides.com putting your info all over the internet
Posted: Jun 17, 2010 7:30 PM

Just wanted to warn others that Brides.com added a feature (without telling us) to their wedding website design page which automatically puts your information (names, wedding info etc) all over the internet as it is now searchable through search engines (thanks to Brides.com!).

They have added 2 new check boxes....one says "Searchable in couples directory" and the other says "Searchable in search engines". The kicker is that they took the liberty of checking "yes" on both boxes.

Just wanted to let others know who didn't happen to notice right away like me. If I hadn't had my invitations printed already, I'd be switching to the Knot!!

Here is the page it is on:

And here are what the check boxes look like:

Can you tell me where this is in the site? Thanks.

EDIT: Actually I'm not found when you search for me. Maybe because my wedding's already past. Hmmm

Is this only if you have a wedding website on brides? Or is it our personal info in the forums also?

Yes, when you go into the "Tools" section of the Brides.com site...and go to webpages...there is a button called "Design". It is where you would choose your website layout (fall, spring, etc), as well as music etc. I'm referring specificall to the Brides.com wedding websites...not others (that is where I have mine set up). I am hoping that by unchecking the boxes, the names will be removed from cached pages on the search engines in a few days...but I'll keep you posted. I don't think info in the forums is affected...just info within your site.

Yeah I didn't use the tools section, so I'm good.

But glad this got posted for anyone who has used that section.

I reported this thread to get the moderator's attention and sent the following message:

You should be aware the brides are not happy you've added a feature and violated their privacy by defaulting the check box to yes without telling them. This is a great way to alienate your user base and drive brides away from your site. A site on which I might add, I've advertised on.

You need to go through right this moment and uncheck the box that allows the bride's information to be searchable on the internet. Next, a notice should be posted informing the brides of what happened, what you've done to resolve the problem and letting them know to check the box as they desire.

I will be posting this in the thread for all to read and informing my Brides Chicago reps of the problem.

I am also forwarding a copy of this to my Conde Nast representatives.

Thanks, Howard. All sites should do this, I mean, particularly with all the Facebook issues going on right now. There are many people here who guard their privacy very closely, and I hope the site fixes this so that it is upfront, defaulted to no, and the user's choice.

We haven't updated the wedding website feature in quite some time, so I don't know where this came from or how long its been there.

I've alerting our production team and seeing if we can undo this.

Update

This feature will automatically be unchecked on all wedding websites in just a few minutes.

Again, I sincerely thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We're all a whole new editorial staff here and without your email we would not have seen this problem.

If you have any comments or concerns with anything pertaining to our site or forum, send an email to contact@brides.com. I check this email account every weekday and am happy to work out any problems you may have.

Thank you Allison, for fixing this. I am disappointed that the information is all over the net, but at least you've addressed the problem going forward, so that is appreciated.

This is exactly why I went with a password-protected wedding website. Glad the problem was fixed!

And while we're on the subject, just as an FYI...threads on these boards also pop up in google searches. So if you're venting about something private and your forum username is your name, or if you have your name or wedding website in your signature or something...your vent isn't as private or anonymous as you think it is. Just sayin'.
