Ethnic/Black/Natural Hair

My fiance loves my natural hair (tight curly texture) and I want to please him by wearing a natural style (no chemicals) but something that's also elegant and not too casual. My dress is prob going to be lacy (Jim Hjelm) style and we are thinking of an excursion wedding. Ideas?

Dear Amb,

I am a whlte woman with a niece married to a black man. My niece's husband has two cousins, themselves brothers, who are both married to women from Africa.

On "dress-up"occasions, these two ladies wear headscarves made out of what looks to me to be heavily starched cotton. There are various ways of arranging the headscarves, including fancy ways to tie the ends.

I don't know how they do it, but they look FABULOUS when they combine the headscarves with typical African formal dress. Those dresses have huge puffed sleeves and are, typically, of a colorful print. You could do something similar, but in white for your wedding.

When these two African ladies enter a room, they make a statement, big time. Everyone says "Wow!".

I blend into the wallpaper in my lavender pastels.

Hi, why not try a weave or some braids. I have seen some very interesting styles in both braids and weaves.

If you like your natural hair, then talk with your hair stylist about adding a few elegant hair accessories, like combs, pins, or flowers. has some great hair pieces. You can also start googling other women with natural hair like Jill Scott, who has some great pictures. There is also a few threads on, with pictures that gives a few ideas on bridal hair styles for ethnic hair.

The other thing is that you can flight iron, blow dry, or hot comb it slightly straight and do an up-do, like a modified french roll. That way if it curls up, it will still look great and you can change the style between your ceremony and reception.

Hope that gives you a few ideas.

After the wedding comes the real funSmile

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Also, congratulations on your decision to go natural! I live in South Africa and I can't help but smile whenever I see a woman with natural hair.

People think options are limited with natural hair but they really aren't. You have soooo many options, I don't know where to begin! Have you thought of whether you'll be wearing a veil? If so, keep that in mind when deciding on a hair style.

If you frequent forums advocating natural hair, you'll come across many, many options!

This is one of my favourite natural bridal looks:

What I like best about this look is that it looks good with hair of just about any texture and it's really easy to do for an excursion wedding. You can prepare a beautiful band or ribbon with Swarovski crystals and beads beforehand and then just pop it on after your usual morning haircare routine. How easy is that? It'll leave masses of time for doing other important things, like actually enjoying your wedding morning!

Great to see more sisters going natural, I love it join a natural haircare forum, or look for a natural haircare specialist in your area.....tell them what you are doing and they will gladly assist you....Me personally I started locking my hair in February and I love it...I am getting married in July of 2011. So I am sure I will be just fine...I have a locktician that takes care of all my hair concerns for me....I am glad you are natural...just look for forums and the style the last poster showed was beautiful...I was thinking of tight curling my locks for my wedding....
