do your maid of honor have to be married orcan she be single?

i want my bestfriend to be my maid of honor but my family is telling me that she cant be because she is not married so now i haveto have my sis in law be my maid of honor because she the only one in my bridal party who is married.

A maid of honor is a single woman.
A matron of honor is a married woman.
A man of honor is a dude.

Pick your attendants on who is important to you not what your family insists.

OP, as noted by LemonCake, a maid of honor, by definition, is SINGLE.

I never heard of such a thing as you can't have a married maid of honor. Technically a married maid of honor is really called a matron of honor. But hun you can have whoever you want as your maid/matron of honor! I am having my sister who happens to be married, however she refuses to be called a matron of honor because it makes her sound old LOL. So intead her title will be a maid of honor. You can pick your married friend to be your maid of honor if you want. It's YOUR wedding for pete's sake you can pick whoever you want :)

Throw the whole idea of "have to," "must be," blah, blah, right out the window. This is 2010, and you can do what you want. Select whomever you really want to be your attendants (f you want to have attendants at all LOL!) It is true that, in terms of strict English definition, a "maid" is a "maiden"--in other words, a virgin, and a "matron"is a married woman. So what's next, gyno exams to check and see if every maid is a "maiden"?
