Are you hiring a Videographer or just hiring a Photgrapher?

Are you hiring a Videographer or just hiring a Photgrapher?

We are debating on if we should also hire a Videographer. I mean, we probably will watch the video every year for our anniversary, but, other than that, it'll just collect dust. Do you ladies think it's worth hiring a Videographer? Or just have a relative record the ceremony and parts of the reception?

Also, any suggestions for a great Photographer?

I hope you hear from Howard, who is a trusted member of the forum and is a professional photographer.

Having said that, I got married almost 34 years ago, when videography was not done. I have "just" a photo album. (The Sony Betamax came out the year before I got married, and it was too expensive for normal people.)

I'm fine with that. It doesn't bother me at all that I don't have a video.

We didn't, and don't regret the decision. But in our case, we would NEVER watch it. And even if we did it so that our future children could see the video, it's not worth the time, effort, and money to keep transferring it to the latest video technology for the next 30 years so that they can watch it.

I have very happy memories of our wedding, but if I relived it even once or twice, that would break the magic (to me) of the memories. In my memory, everything was perfect. I'm sure if I watched the video, I'd find things that weren't perfect and they would bother me. And the more I watched the video, the more the little things would bother me. I'd rather remember it the way it is in my head, even if my memory is selective.

I'm with Artbride on this. I know myself and I'd never watch it. Plus I HATE the sound of my voice on TV!! It was $1900 extra in our photo package too so that was the icing on the cake for that decision. I am more of a photo person anyway. I actually do bust out my album now and then and look back and I am brought back to that day--without having to hear my own voice!

If you want a video you can have a family member record the ceremony and speeches and cake cutting stuff at the reception with a video camcorder...especially if you are on the fence with the video decision.

A wedding video is one of those things you don't need, but if you've got it, you're so happy you do.

I got a wedding video because I know how much I would love, love, love to have a wedding video of my parents marriage. And, especially, my grandparents marriage. To see those great aunts and great uncles and great grandmothers and cousins, many who have passed, in all their movements and mannerisms would be awesome.

Already, one person in my wedding video has died, my grand-aunt. Sure, I've got pictures, but I like knowing I've got video of her interacting with my father too on my big day. Means a lot.

Also on my wedding video is hilarious footage of one of our groomsmen on the dance floor doing some seriously spectacular dance moves. And, my videographer pulled our friends/families aside (without our knowing about it) and had them videorecord messages to us, which we never realized until a year later when we watched it with our families. It was awesome. Truth is, the 3-4 times we've watched the video (in 2.5 years, which is actually more times than we've looked at our photos), we fast forward through the ceremony, and go straight to the video footage of the stuff we don't remember from the day.

This isn't to say you need to spend big $$ on a wedding videographer. As far as I'm concerned, if you've got a few people who are willing to take turns holding a shaky video camera at different points during the day, that's fine. But I do recommend it.

We're not hiring a videographer. Mostly we decided to really splurge on an incredible photographer (it was #1 on my list), so I decided I could cut the video in favor of beautiful pictures. I have a bunch of friends who have film degrees (I went to NYU, where every third person is a film major! haha) and a couple of them have offered to bring cameras on the day, and then cut a little something together, but I figure I'd rather have them enjoy themselves, so I'm just going to see if one of them can set up a camera on a tripod for the ceremony.
I think it really depends on what's important to you though! I can see why video is important to some people.

I'm with Ms. D. You don't need it, but I would have loved to see videos of my parents' and g-parents' weddings as well if it had been possible.

We had one and I'm happy we got it. But you're correct, you'll probably only watch it on your anniversary. But we pull out our photos about as often as we pull out the video, and would I regret it if I didn't have them? You betcha.

All that said, I would have regretted not having a photographer far more than I would have regretted not having a videographer. But I do think it's supercool that we can listen and re-listen to our ceremony and vows, which you can't do with photos. I think that rocks.

I cannot imagine either of my children ever having the slightest interest in our wedding photos or a video.

My niece did. "You were a lot skinnier then." "Oops. Um, I mean, I guess the dress made you look thinner. Um, oops."

Yeah, showing the kids is a barrel of laffs.

This totally depends on your budget.

If you have room to comfortably do it, you definitely should. I would love to watch the videos of my mom and grandma or anyone else in my family.

Also its one of those things where if you budget allows, its a great thing to have. Even if you dont watch it hardly ever, you still have the option to do so. Just as you will have the option to show your kids if they ask one day.

I know many people say they didnt have it and didnt need or miss it, but again, if its comfortable with your budget, its just a great thing to have. Because its better to have it and not use it, then not have it and have no choice if you want to see it later.

First, congratulations on your engagement and upcoming wedding. About 150 years ago, there was no such thing as photography or video. People remembered via drawings or writing it down. It wasn't until the 1920's when cameras became more available. At that time, people got married then went to a photography studio for a wedding portrait. Over the years, cameras have become more portable and able to capture more of the wedding for posterity. You have to realize that only 4-5 people are really needed for a wedding. The couple, the officient and the witnesses. Everything else is window dressing.

Only you can decide how much you are willing to spend on your wedding. However, I can tell you in these tight times, many people are doing without video. If they do want it and have spare cash in their budget they may decide to purchase video. But before you do that, you should think long and hard to determine if you have other, better uses for the money. There will be plenty of bills to pay once you start your married life. There will always be the unexpected and you can't count on gift money to seed your nest egg. You may decide to spend a little bit more money on a photographer to make sure you get good quality. There is a point of diminishing returns at which it is best to save your money. I hope this gives you some insight into photography/video. Recently, I got the chance to watch my fiance's parents wedding video from 33 years ago. I thought it was a great experience and it made me want to have a videographer at my wedding even more. The picture was so clear (and I do mean it was amazingly clear!) and I loved seeing Anton's parents interacting with each other and with their guests at such a young age! It had been years since they'd watched it, and they only brought it out to show me, but it ended up being that they were glad to see it again and very glad they had it!

Do I need one? no.... do I want one? Yes. But that's my choice. Good luck making yours! :)

I did not have a videograpgher because i wanted to keep the wedding small. By the time I realize I forgot it it was too late to ask. My sister and brother-in-law who took the pictures ( and did a great job) edited ones from the wedding together so I have that. There are a few things I miss but I'll live.

We asked a friend to video it for us...and our wedding video budget was a Video camera.

Now we have a video camera and a wedding video.

DH has edited it to bites and put some parts on youtube. We made copies for relatives and close friends who could not be there.

(Of course, the photo montage I made I like almost as well....it's also on Youtube)

Just a photographer. My friend is pretty handy with a camera so he is going to video everything for free for us.

We're hiring just a photographer. Included in our package is a slideshow of the images in chronological order, so we figured that was good enough.
