Asking guests to choose entree on RSVP card

Im having dual caterers (one carries my favorite dish), is it appropriate to ask guests to choose chicken, fish or steak on the RSVP card to have an idea of how much of each we should order? I dont want to have him prep 150 steaks and only 50 are eaten...

I think it's fairly common to have each guest indicate their meal preference on the RSVP card. This is done so you can get final numbers to give to the caterer.

Absolutely. As well as tracking the people coming, this is often the function of RSVP cards.

Dear NYC,

People do that all the time. You'll also see place cards with little color codes that indicate the person's expressed choice of meal, so the servers can bring the food out efficiently.

There might be a blue dot for fish, red for steak and green for chicken, for example.

I don't see anything wrong with that. It's extremely efficient! You get your RSVPs for the ceremony & reception as well as an estimate for the caterer in advance. Do it =)

I think most caterers require final numbers of each dish, I know mine does. And in addition to the colour-coding AOTB mentioned, I'm also required to produce a final seating chart x-number of days in advance, indicating what dish goes where.
