Trying to figure out how to make colors work
Posted: Nov 20, 2009 1:11 PM

I'm getting married
in June in the California's Central
Valley. I am wanting to do a variety of different purples as my
colors but one thing that I'm trying to do, and can't quite figure out is how
to make certain important aspects of family tradition work with that color.

For instance, my fiancée's younger brother was killed in car accident a little over
two years ago. He was not only his younger brother but also his best friend in
the world. If he were alive today he would be the best man in the wedding. My fiancée's
family started a tradition of placing sunflowers at the gravesite every time
they go out there. My fiancée and I would really like to incorporate the
sunflowers in our wedding to honor not just his brother but my grandparents and all other family members who have passed away, but we are unsure of how to make it work with the
purples (since neither of us really like yellow).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well, you only have a limited number of choices, but still, choices:
1. Use the yellow sunflowers with the purples (but in limited amounts and specific places)
2. Sunflowers come in other colors. See if you can find white (or brown, burnt orange).
2. Use another, similar flower--wide open white dahlias, for example.
4. Choose another way to honor his brother and family members--with a song, for example, or carrying a tiny picture in your bouquet or his bout. Or including him in a family photo display and laying a single yellow sunflower next to his picture.
I'm sure that others here will come up with more ideas.

I agree with what the previous poster said. As for another flower, gerbera daisies are very similar (in my opinion) to sunflowers and they come in a variety of colors. Or, there's always white sunflowers. A purple and white wedding would be pretty.

sunflower is not a traditional flower incorporated with weddings but it is a unique one if you have it on your wedding day since it is not that common. you can still have purple in your wedding and sunflowers as well. all you have to do is to plan carefully where to place sunflowers. take for example, you can place bouquet of sunflowers with additional white flowers if you don't want yellow to over power the purple color on it along the aisle. you can make sunflowers decorations also during your entourage party... it doesn't have to be many as long as you are giving way to the tradition that your fiancé is doing so.

You know, I think purple and yellow go together like peanut butter and jelly. I love to mix purple irises with sunflowers. The iris have a little yellow on the petals. If you don't want sunflowers to be a focal point, you might have a Rememberance Table at your reception with pictures of those you want to remember and have that table decorated with sunflowers and leave everything else to the purples you love.
