We THOUGHT our RSVP system was flawless...
Posted: Sep 14, 2009 1:30 AM

We arranged things so all of our RSVPs
came in through our wedding website. Each invitation had a code, and
when you logged in to the RSVP page using that code, it listed the
people invited via that invitation. It was therefore possible to say
yes or no as to each person, but not to add any more people.

This
worked just fine up until today. Today was the day that my son/"dude of
honor", of all people, discovered that the function that asked if
someone was coming was not tied to the function that asked what meal
they wanted. So he checked the boxes to indicate that he was coming,
but his girlfriend was not. But he also selected meals for both of
them. He told us that this was because he was really hungry, and wanted
to eat both his meal and hers.

Yeah, nice try!

This is hilarious!

By the way - I think it sounds like a really good way to handle RSVP's - but what about people who aren't "computer savvy"?

"Nothing is fool proof because the fool are so damned ingenious!"

It seems to me that you should be able to check the number of meals ordered against the number of people who are coming to see if there are any other problems. The loophole that was discovered would still cause a problem because there would not be a chair for the extra person. If you wrote this program yourselves, then you should be able to fix it. Perhaps not in time for your wedding but for the next one. This sounds like a nice web application that others might be interested in purchasing for their own use. Just consider this beta testing!

BibliophileMom, our guests are all tech savvy. The ones that are 85 and in nursing homes seem to have their fingers permanently stuck on the "forward" button on their e-mail, but they can manage an RSVP form. We only had one person who couldn't manage the form, and that person sent me an instant message to let me know.

Howard, the program we are using is an open-source plug-in for WordPress. NotFroofy, who adapted it for our guests, didn't bother to include that verification. The ceremony is in MA, and will have only a dozen guests. The invitations for the much larger reception back home just required a yes or no answer, so only the ceremony RSVPs were affected by the glitch. Thus, NotFroofy thought it was easier just to pick out those guests who gave nonsensical answers and ask them for clarification than to put in complex verification routines.

However, fixing it for the next person doesn't make a whole lot of sense for us. The plug-in is open source, so we couldn't use it commercially. And in any event, it has been our experience that when we tell people there is a plug-in for WordPress, their eyes just glaze over anyway. NotFroofy is a Web designer, and is used to working with WordPress, but most couples don't want to spend that much effort on their RSVP system.
