Silk Flowers
Posted: Aug 2, 2009 6:42 PM

Since the ladies on this site have helped me many times before I once again come to you for guidance. Money is a big issue with us right now (as it is with everyone) and I'm making cuts on the wedding budget. Well I chose to strike at the flowers with my budget cutting ax and possibly not have any real flowers in the wedding now on to the point of my rambling.

My question is would it be okay to go with silk flowers for my bouquet the BM's and all the guys? Has anyone seen this done? If so does it look good or cheap?

You'll get a lot of responses I'm sure! Some for it, some against it. I did it, and I love that my bouquet is forever in my china cabinet. (I put mine in those silver tussie-mussie holder things, no throwing that!) The holders came with bases so we could also use them as centerpieces!

I got ours from www.afloral.com

Don't know what's up with the lines and all!

I'm doing that too. flowers just aren't that important to me though. As long as it's a nice arangement I don't think anyone will notice at first.

Flowers really aren't important to me not to mention all the flowers I do like aren't in season in October.

I did silk flowers and I do not regret it. It saved me a lot of money, and headache. I went to Micheal's and picked out the flowers I liked, and they have a person there that will arrange them for you. All I had to do for my bouquets were wrap them. I also made the bouts for the men, but the lady at Michael's gave me a crash course on that in the store, and gave me her number to call her just in case. I think i spent maybe a little over $100 for my bouquet, the 3 BM bouquests, Dh's bout, 2 Gm bouts, my dads bout, and my mom's coursage. Thats including the flowers, the labor for her putting them together, and all supplies.

Here is my dad's bout (the rest were a variation of it) DSCN0376.jpg image by Nessabear615

And the bouquets DSCN0250.jpg image by Nessabear615 DSCN0243.jpg image by Nessabear615

I hope this helps!

I think it really depends on how you put them together. My friend made her own bouquets with flowers from hobby lobby and they looked pretty awful. when she made the bouquets she used a lot of hot glue so you could see the dots and smudges where she messed up and there were those little strings everywhere. so if you decide to use fake flowers definitely talk to someone about putting them together. Good luck.

Here are my thoughts, because I'm in agreement with headoverheels:

I think fake floral can go two ways: if done right, they can look lovely and almost impossible to tell they're not real. If done incorrectly, they can look horribly tacky in my opinion.

First off, definitely invest in the proper supplies. Get some good florist wire, some ribbon to tie them off and cover any wiring, and definitely get some good wire cutters so you're not breaking your hand trying to cut them with scissors and ending up with half bent-all-to-heck flowers.

Next, pick up a few floral arranging books at your local library, or snag some photos for inspiration from the internet and try your best to copy them. Sometimes I think that people think flower arranging is way easier than it is.

I say this all and it sounds like I'm down on faux florals. I'm not. I am actually doing them for the bouquets in our wedding as well. The difference is that I have help from an aunt who is trained in horticulture and can help me create some lovely bouquets without all those glue gobs like PP said!

Also. Grab some quality faux flowers if you're going to go this way. The ones from the dollar store are nice for home decor or whatever, but remember, this is your wedding. Anything you do that looks cheaper will contribute to the cheapening of the overall look of your wedding. Grab some of the real touch types from Hobby Lobby or Michaels if you're going to go the faux floral route.

Hope all this helps! Best of luck!

Hi there!

I have a friend who used them in her wedding and thought they looked great, but from what I've heard, good quality silk flowers are almost as much as real, in-season flowers. I definetly see the benefit in that you can arrange and do everything ahead of time and save on last minute stress though! Other than that, I dont' know too much about silk flowers.

However, what I did to save money on flowers, was got them in bulk from costco. I live in canada, so I am not sure what they offer where you live, but they sell boutonnierres and bouquets here. I got those for the GMs and BMs and pre-ordered a bunch of the other flowers they have available. I picked them up the day before and, with the help of my family, we arranged the flowers into the vases for the centerpieces. Of course this meant we had to keep them cool for the whole day and arrange transportation for 11 vases full of flowers to our reception site, but it was totally worth it. Here in canada they only do rose bouquets, and since I am not a huge fan of rose-only bouquets, I ordered mine from an actual florist (which cost a lot more, but since it was only one bouquet, the price was fine for me, it just would have been too much if it was for the whole bridal party).

Anyways, for 4 BMs bouquets, 4 GMs boutonnierres, 4 ushers bounnierres, and enough flowers for 11 large centerpieces I think cost me around $350. I hope this helps and good luck!

I think it depends on the type of flower you choose to be silk. Certain flowers tend to look cheap, while others (depending on how the arrangement is set up) can look either real or very nice.
What kind of flowers were you thinking of?
There are some black silk roses I love and hope to have for my wedding. If I get those, they will noticeably be fake, not because of how they were made, but simply because there are no real black roses. Most silk roses tend to look very nice. Also, orchids do to.

We are doing artificial flowers for our wedding in October. We chose to use the real-touch and latex flowers from Hobby lobby (hydrangea, calla lilies, roses.. and greenery) The flowers feel and look so real up close.

Also, Hobby Lobby has 50% off their flowers pretty much every other week... so I just bought a little each time.

We found photos from arrangement we liked.. and took photos at bridal fairs to come up with the ideas.

Here are some of the photos of the bouquets, bouts, and large alter arrangement. (Sorry about the quality, these are what my friend sent me by camera phone while i was out of town... haven't taken real photos yet)

I'm aiming for tiger lillies in tropical colors but if I can't find those any flowers that look tropical would work.

Did you try www.afloral.com? That's where I found my clover. The flowers looked pretty nice, nicer than some I've seen. Reasonably priced as well!

You're very welcome! I ordered WAY more than I needed from them, probably could've returned them but didn't....
