Not so formal Groomswear?

We are planning a summertime Lake Tahoe wedding. Very intimate, approximately 20 guests. Possibly on beach. I want to wear a traditional dress with either no train or a short train. My fh wants to wear shorts and hawaiian print shirt. While I know he isn't comfortable in traditional formalwear, I don't want him wearing shorts and a casual shirt. Any ideas for a compromise?
