I happen to think a black and white theme is so classic it can be done any time of the year, although I would go easy on the black in the spring. As far as accent colors go, you can use ANY color with black and white. In terms of how to proceed I would recommend (I am an event coordinator so I use this myself) budget, guest list estimate, venue, vendors (photographer, baker etc) then work on the little details such as cake design, attire and flowers. Its much easier to think about colors once you know where the wedding will take place. Trust me on this one - budget first! There is even a budget calculator on here to help you out. I think there is probaly some sort of to do list as well, up on the budget and tasks link. Good luck and Happy New Year!

1) Breathe!

2) Black and white is classic. You can use it any time of year, and you can accent it with whatever color(s) you want. Red, purple, pink, green, silver, anything! Can't go wrong.

3) You said you want a late spring wedding outside. It's probably a little late for 2009, but it depends what area you live in and what budget you have to work with. But many venues and vendors book up a year or more in advance, plus it can take up to 6 months for a wedding gown to come in once you order it. So you could think about May or June of 2010.

A lot of setting the date has to do with when your ceremony and reception venues are available. For instance, I knew I wanted my wedding on a Saturday in June, so when we were looking for reception halls, we kept that in mind. The one we chose had the 23rd and the 30th available. We went with the 23rd because it was sooner.

Right now, enjoy being engaged, and try browsing sites like this to get ideas. You should try and nail down a budget pretty soon, and a tentative guest list, since the number of guests will determine how much you can spend per person for your reception. It may also rule out some venues that are too large or small.

Good luck!

With outdoor locations keep state parks in mind! I'm doing mine at a state park and it's MUCH cheaper and very very beautiful. It doesn't book up as quickly either. In fact we have to wait until jan. to book our spot for aug.

I agree though black & white goes with any time of year. Then again I never really understood all that colors and seasons thing.. lol

I'm not much help right now as far as the decorations go, but I did want to say that you can definitely have a black and white wedding whenever you want. I'm having my black and white wedding this upcoming September.

The PP's are right--black and white is classic, neutral, and good at any time of year. it's all in how your put it together. Contact me through my website and I will send you pics of various black and white weddings (even tropical ones). As for how to decorate the venue(s), it's wise to have selected them first, before you worry about how to decorate. Each venue has a style of its own, and very few of them are blank slates.A lot depends on the venue itself--it is formal or casual, does it supply things (like linens, chairs, and dishes) or do you supply them, is it light and bright or do you need to supply some sparkle, is there already an accent color that you need to accomodate? If you want a tent, where do you intend to plunk it down?

Wedding books and websites usually include suggested timelines for planning that needs to be done. Although you can take them with a grain of salt (ignore things that you have no intention of doing), they're good to look at to get some ideas. And the ladies here are very helpful with specific questions.

ok relax! :) you're in luck, because black and white go with EVERYTHING. My suggestion is look for inspiration images, online, in magazines, anywhere. And not just bridal magazines, think outside the box. For example, you could get inspiration for a color scheme by looking at bedding or clothing,

like to see how black/white would look with greens and organic colors -

or how about black/white/pink/beige -

or black/white/cherry/blue - .

or black/white/blue/green -

black/white/yellow - (not too much yellow, u dont want a bumblebee theme)

or my favorite, black/white/pink -

These are just a couple sources of inspiration. You could be walking down the street and see a beautiful black sports car with a certain colored interior and go "oh my god, that looks awesome". The point is inspiration comes from anywhere, and with black and white, the sky is the limit. Just keep an open mind.

As for flowers, again, anything would look good against black and white...see?... (i just had to post that)

Another thing you could maybe try is gathering pictures of things you like that might pertain to your wedding, without worrying about what goes and what doesnt, and tape them randomly to a posterboard. flowers, fabric swatches, a picture of a dress... like a picture of a chandeleir? tape it on there! Whatever you are drawn to! Maybe even go to a scrapbooking store and gather some papers with colors or patterns you just plain like, cut squares of them and tape them to the board. Step back and just look at your collage. Remove anything that seems awkward or doesnt flow with the rest. You will probably be surprised to find that some of the things you were worried would not go with your black/white theme actually look really nice. And maybe you will inadvertently create your own unique color scheme.

I hope this helps! Good luck with all, and have fun with it!

I agree with classydame! Black and white go with everything. You could pick lime green if that's your favorite color, or pale aqua blue, or pink, or red. any color is going to add to your scheme without a problem. just think of what each color represents or makes you feel : Pink = feminine red = sexy green = earthy etc.

here's a few ideas:

I'm pretty sure that black and white works all year long. I'm having a black and white wedding in August with green flowers. A few years ago, I was in a friend's black and white wedding in May and the only other colors that she had were in the flowers. She just told the florist that she wanted them bright and fresh looking and the whole thing ended up being absolutely beautiful!!

I just had a black and white themed wedding and thought it turned out great! My ceremony accent color was red-- we had red poinsettias, red rose bouquet. For the reception, though, we only did black, white, and crystal, with a few silver touches. I thought it turned out great!

I have several of my items for sale if you are interested. I love them but just don't need them anymore. check out

Good luck on your planning!

So after choosing a million different wedding dates (October 24, 2009
and May 15,2009... among many others...) we finally chose JUNE 12th,
2009!!! It's a Friday wedding so that our honeymoon can be longer :)
(Too bad we have to come back for work and school!!!)

Dress: Looking at many dresses.... I'm a more modest person so this is the dress I am thinking of...

The third dress my sister is also in love with. So if I went with that
dress we would probably buy it together and share it!!! ($300 each is
not bad at all!!!)

Colors: Black and White with many different summer colors as the
accents! The bridesmaids will be in black. The dresses that we are
thinking are:

With black pumps and a string of pearls! I love the elegence of it. I
think I'm going to channel Audrey Hepburn for my wedding :)

It is going to be an out door wedding. My parents best friends have a
multi million dollar house with a beautiful back yard! Complete with a
pool for the floating decorations, a waterfall and many flowers!!!

Food/Catering etc: Fruits!! I love fruits! I'm thinking along the lines
of kiwi, pineapple, watermellon, cantalope etc. Yum!! All arranged
gorgeously on gorgeous platters! Then cheesecake and eclairs! All of
this will be on a multi level table with a black and white (but not
polka dotted or striped... just two tones somehow. Maybe two different
table cloths on top of eachother?)

The tables will be black table clothed and the chairs will also be
black with white sashes. Then the centerpieces will be about 10" vases
with many different summer color flowers!

Any ideas for an Audrey Hepburn esque wedding? I'm so excited! I feel
like everything is falling together!! Only five more months! But ideas
would be greatly helpful!!!

as most people have said, black and white weddings are classic and can happen every year
you were saying that you don't know when to have it or your accent colours
well i would pick when you want to have it and then choose your accent colours according to the season
a pale pink or soft greens would be beautiful accent colours in the spring and so on

i love that photo posted above of the b&w white wedding with the blue table clothes, I think that is beautiful.

I used to want to have a black and white wedding with red roses everywhere when I was younger, my taste has changed, but I still think that would be beautiful, red rose petals scattered on black or white table clothes, etc

I am not planning a black and white wedding. my weding is going to be lavender and silve, my wedding is may 6th of 2011. but for flowers i would suggest white flowers on a black table clothe. That would look good. and for the chairs, if you are dedorating them, black covers and a white bow. other than that i cant think of anything else but if i do i will re post

I am also planning a Black & White wedding. We are having a July tent reception. My personal opinion is that black & white is so sharp and classy you can pull it off anytime of the year and it will work in any venue. So if you want a black & white tent wedding in late spring it will look beautiful!
We are using a bold bright red as a accent color. I'm a catering manager and have seen fuchsia and mint green used as accent colors with black and white and that looks great too
Here are some of the thing we decided to do for our wedding
black imperial strip floor length linen with white napkins
square glass vases with 3 open vibrant red roses surrounded by lots of glimmering votive candles and white & red rose petals on a square mirror tile
my bouquet is all open red roses & my ladies bouquets will be variety of cream flowers(cream gerber daisys with black centers are one type) accented with black & white ribbons.
Bridesmaid's dresses are strappless tea-length in black lace over ivory satin
Our cermony is outside so we chose red & white rose petals as a aisle runner
Our invitations and programs are printed on white paper with black scrollwork patterns
Hope this helps you

I just had a black and white themed wedding. And good news...its beautiful. Even my dress had black emboirdery. I have the pics in my allbum and you can see how things are decorated and my dress. Lucky too, Micheals has tons of things for a black and white wedding. You can get ideas there too. One thing that is really enhances a black and white wedding is soft lighting. We had tons of candles on the tables and it seemed like everything just glowed!
Good luck
