Do I need a ceramony program?
Posted: Jun 11, 2008 10:50 AM

I am getting married in a Catholic church. Most of the guests are catholic. My fiance and I have requested the deacon, not the priest,to marry us. A deacon cannot perform a mass, therefore it will just be the wedding ceramony-still about 30 to 45 minutes long.

What are your thoughts if I forgo the program? I've seen a few, and I'm not impressed. I don't want one as a momento, and I think the non-catholic guests will be able to figure out what's going on without it.

I don't think they're necessary. We're not having them for my wedding. They are nice to read, but afterward I feel like most people just toss them anyways. I think it's an extra, unnecessary expense.

I think it's nice to "introduce" your wedding party, organist, officiant, etc.  And it's nice to have an order of things even in the barest bones.  It doesn't have to be PAGES long, you could have on 8 1/2 by 11 folded in half.

But it's up to you.  I also think that for your guests who appropriately arrive "early" it is something nice for them to read through.

We had a deacon marry us too in a Catholic church.  The ceramony was no more than 45 min, not the full mass.  That being said, we didn't have programs.  Of all the weddings that I've attended, I've thrown them away.

It's really up to you.  We had a Catholic wedding with the mass.  We made programs and everyone liked that.  My cousin is actually using my program to plan her own ceremony.  We had a lot of guests who were not Catholic and most liked the program.  We still got a few complaints but you are going to get that regardless.

I am not Catholic.  My honest opinion (?) :  I prefer to have a program so I know how much longer I have to sit there!  Don't get me wrong, I love weddings, but to someone who is not used to the length of a Catholic ceremony, those things seem like they go on forever!!!  Plus I do like to know hoe the WP is related/associated to the couple (MOH=Brides sister, for example).  And, my last reason for liking programs, they work great as fans as many times it gets hot/stuffy during wedding ceremonies.

The first day of my happily ever after is 9-13-2008!!

Our priest recommended not having programs.

I'd say forgo them if you really want to. And they really aren't for you as they are for your guests. No one says you have to keep it. We had them at our small wedding so everyone knew who everyone was and substitute as a fan. lol

I am still debating about having a program.  I am having a small wedding with only myself, groom, and groom's two children in the wedding.  Everyone knows everyone else so I know they are not necessary, but I have always put a program with a wedding.  I have already bought the ribbon, paper but have yet to decide.  What to do???

I'd say if you want one, why not? You've already got the supplies! :)
