what would you do??

Mar 16, 2009 4:50 PM

So after re-examining our budget I don't think that I'll be able to afford a larger recpetion, which is what I really wanted. My Mom was planning on paying for all the invitations and half of the food, well she lost her job awhile back, she has found a new one, but it's a large cut from what she was making, I don't think I could accept money from her now, evern if she offered.

I was thinking of having light finger foods, a wedding cake, grooms cake, chocolate fountain with fresh fruit and other "dip-ables" and punch??

Cutting the guest list I guess is an option, but the whole reason we are having an a reception is because we are having a destination wedding.

Any other ideas on how to cut back??

Our venue is an amazing deal, 100 per hour of use with the day before and after for set up and clean up! This includes table and chairs but no linens...

Dear KW,

You are in good company. Many, many good people are losing jobs or otherwise getting cut back in this terrible economy.

Your plan is sound. I suggest you indicate "light refreshments" on your invitation, so guests will know not to come ravenously hungry and expecting a full meal.

For economizing, I suggest you check out CostCo and other discount places. They often offer nice catering platters of food that might suit your needs at an affordable price. Similarly, you might really negotiate with any local deli or catering outfit. In this economy, EVERYTHING is negotiable.

Do the best you can and be proud.

I think those suggestions by the PP are awesome (especially the language "light refreshments"). I heard that moving a reception from the evening to the afternoon is also a good way to cut costs, as people will be less likely to stay as long, and cocktails aren't necessarily expected... not to mention the whole dinner cost.

I hope it works out well. I'm sure you'll have an incredible time, no matter what cost-cutting techniques you utilize!

My fiancee's sister had a destination wedding, but that was it. She didn't do another party back home. It was thought that if you wanted to come, then you would pay the tickets and come down for it. She did end up having alot of people, 90 family and friends came. A friend did do a small reception after her wedding in Floridia. I think she did a cash bar to help on costs. That would have never worked with my family.
I really wanted a destination wedding, but i knew that alot of my family who I wanted there couldn't afford to go and couldn't fly. So I sucked it up and am staying local.

I think a light refreshment offering is a nice idea, offer limited alcoholic beverages like beer and wine only and finger foods.

Light refreshment is the way to go. Agreed with all previous posters :)

If I was in your shoes, I'd just have the destination wedding and small reception for those who attended and skip the larger reception at home. Either that or I'd have a very casual (I'm thinking BBQ) celebration after returning from my honeymoon. I don't think it's necessary for the later reception to be too fancy or 'wedding-y'.

I'm not sure if you were planning to hire a DJ but that could be another way to cut back. I was at a wedding over the summer where the couple just created their own playlist on their Ipod and had that playing. They played great music and I never missed the cheesy DJ!
Also for a photographer (again, not sure if you were planning to have one) try calling your local newspaper or photography school and ask if any freelancers do weddings on the side. We're using a photojournalist (I work at the newspaper) and it's much less expensive and his pictures are amazing! Just an idea.
