HELP! Bridesmaid dress inappropriate?
Posted: Aug 15, 2009 10:15 PM

When I started planning for my wedding I wanted my bridesmaids to be able to wear a dress that they liked and was the best for their body. I had seen at a botique a convertable dress used for bridesmaids and I loved the idea! All the maids were different but in the same color and they could wear it in many different ways. The problem was the dress was $300! Wasn't going to ask my girls to do that. Later, I was told about a dress from victoria's secret that is a similar. You can wear it in 7 differnet ways and I thought it would be perfect.

Six months later, my sister tells me she thinks the dress is inappropriate for a wedding and against my dress. She thinks the cleavage lines are too low (I thought we could pin them higher or just not have them wear it that way) that the skirt is too short, and that the cotton jersey is the wrong material against my silk dress. I dont know! What do you all think???

Here is a link to the bridesmaid dress

And here is something that looks like my dress

What is your wedding going to be like? I can't answer whether or not the dress is appropriate without knowing the type of wedding. I don't think the dress is appropriate for a church wedding or a formal wedding. For a summer outdoor wedding, however, it might be Ok - but again, it depends on the level of formality of the wedding.

The thing that would concern me the most is the material. It's a cute dress, but once you see it in person, I think it'll look even less formal than it does in the photos. I bought a similar dress from Victoria's Secret a couple years ago, not realizing that it was cotton. I had intended to wear it to a wedding, but once I saw it in person, I thought it was too informal to wear to a wedding as a guest. It was the material that did it for me. If the same dress had been made in a different material, it probably would have been alright - but the cotton made it too casual for a wedding, in my opinion.

On the neckline issue, I personally think it's too lowcut for BMs in a wedding - but that's me. Yes, you can wear it in several styles, but 4 out of 6 possibilities would make me uncomfortable, if I was asked to wear it to a wedding.

As for the issue of your dress vs theirs, if you really care about the styles matching in formality, I'd go with a more formal BM dress. The more important issue is whether the dress matches the overall formality of the wedding. If your wedding is formal, they'll look underdressed. If it's a casual wedding, you could probably get away with the dresses - but I wouldn't dress the groomsmen in tuxes. Go for something more casual, if the BMs are going to be in a casual dress. It's Ok if your dress (and your FH's outfit) are a little more formal than everything else - but the attendants's clothing should match the general formality of the wedding itself.

Also, I thought I'd let you know that many bridal designers make mix-and-match BM collections. They're generally two-piece outfits and the BMs choose the top and skirt that fit their body best. Or you might choose the same skirt and have them choose their own tops. Look at Alfred Angelo and David's for options that might be similar in price to the VS dress.

I have to agree with Artbride on all accounts. The material is listed as a spandex/polyester jersey - that seems like it's not going to be as nice as it looks.

Good luck!

Thanks! We were thinking of having it more informal than formal. And for the men we were going for suits than a tux. After a lot of tears and thinking, I am just going to purchase one for myself and then go from there. :) Thanks for your opinion and help!

Sia,

That sounds like the best idea. That way you can see how well the dress is/or is not made and also if the cleavage is going to be an issue - but maybe you can put some material in the cleavage to make it look nice and not too low cut.

Good luck!

(Also, while I know it has upset you - better for your sis to say something NOW then the day before your wedding.)

I've been looking at this dress for a few minutes trying to decide exactly what I think. I do think it will look informal next to your wedding dress, but that is mostly due to the material. You said your dress is silk (sorry if I'm remembering that wrong). Silk can sometimes look heavy if used in large amounts, and VS dress is light and flowy, so you have to consider that contrast. If you are dead set on this dress though, then definitely get it in black. Don't try to go for the pinks or another ligther color, as that will just make it more obvious that it is an "everyday dress" instead of a bridal party dress.

I completely disagree that it is too short. It is almost to the woman in the display pictures knees. I'm guessing she is probably a tall "amazon" model too. So unless your girls are all 5'9"+, then you'll probably be okay. I know on me, I'm short so that dress would be below my knees.

As for it being too sexy, if you use the twist around (this what I would suggest), tie-waist, or one shoulder then it wouldn't look AS sexy. Also if your girls aren't quite as blessed in the chest area, it won't be quite as sexy. You should also have them wear their hair down, because that will cover more skin and not make them look as "revealed." It will also help if they wear basic black kitten heels instead of taller shoes.

Here is the dress I went with for the girls, affordable & figure flattering. If you don't like the VS one when it comes in just keep looking you'll find something that makes them happy that won't break their bank.
